Hackett was a member of Brad Washburn's team on the first ascent of Mt McKinley via the West Buttress. In 1960 he led a German-American attempt on K2, which followed the route of Desio's successful Italian team, but the expedition was thwarted by bad weather and reached 7250m. Biography of Bill Hackett, his climbs and his WWII fighting with the 10th Mtn Division. He was member of Washburn's first ascent of the West Buttress of Mt McKinley.
