Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Not a book but a 10-inch, 33-1/3 rpm "Long Playing Microgroove" vinyl "compilation" record, Capitol H-325, near-mint vinyl in a very-good-plus cardboard jacket. In 1952 "jazz" was in transition out of the confines of the tightly scored "big bands," of course. This "sampler" offers the single cut Budo (Bud Powell-Miles Davis) by Miles Davis and his Orchestra (including Lee Konitz and Gerry Mulligan), the single cut "Oo-La-La" (Gillespie-Williams-Acea) by Dizzy Gillespie and his Orchestra (including John Coltrane and Paul Gonsalves), "Overtime" (Pete Rugolo) performed by Charlie Barnet and his Orchestra, Neal Hefti's "Opus 96" performed by Bill Harris and his Orchestra (gosh, what a lot of "orchestras"!) and some cuts by Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. "The music may sound dissonant to the casual listener on first hearing," warn the Capitol liner notes, "but additional plays reveal a wealth of modern invention, never before heard on record. This is tomorrow's music today!" Well, mostly. Drummer Shelly Manne manages to show up on three cuts, Max Roach on two. Catalogs $60; here reduced from $25.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Not a book but a 10-inch, 33-11/3 rpm Long Play (mono, monaural) vinyl record, MacGregor Transcriptions LP 201, near-mint vinyl in a very-good cardboard jacket with small sticker pull, top right. Recorded in the 1940s; date of release unknown but surely pre-1963. "These recordings were made at the MacGregor studios in Los Angeles. To give the feeling of the enthusiasm of the Rendezvous Ballroom, some of the Kenton fans were invited to the session. Jimmy Lyons, now one of the country's foremost jazz disc jockeys who was then a DJ in nearby Santa Ana, announced the numbers. It is to MacGregor's credit that they had the foresight to record this new band in the early 40's." Kenton and fellow arranger Ralph Yaw "were the first to extensively use open voicing in the sax section," which combined with "the staccato push notes characteristic of the early Kenton band" made the sound "perfect for jitterbugging." Reduced from $60.
