From the blurb - "Edith Kirsch in this book reveals how a group of manuscripts commissloned by Giangaleazzo Visconti (and, in one instance, for his funeral oration) reflects not only his dynastic concerns but also the development of his inclination to express these concerns through works of art that establish both his classical heroism and his Christian piety. Considered as a group for the first time, these manuscripts document one of Giangaleazzo's most innovative activities as a manuscript collector - the commissioning of lavish manuscripts to commemorate major dynastic events. In their richness and in the extraordinary verisimilitude and historical specificity of their decoration, these manuscripts document the self-image of a prince who set out to record his unprecedented accomplishments in unprecedented fashion. Like his politics, however, Giangaleazzo's patronage of the arts was shaped by the practices of his ancestors, and his accomplishments as a patron are best understood in the context of family tradition. Giangaleazzo's library rivaled even that of his brother-in-law, King Charles V of France, reputed to be the greatest collector of manuscripts in late fourteenth-century Europe. Kirsch's study rests on the premise that Giangaleazzo's patronage of manuscripts was marked by certain charactenstic features: execution of the work by exceptionally gifted scribes and illuminators, unusual fullness and richness of both text and illumination, unusual combinations of texts, unusual conjunctions of text and image, and iconographical manipulation of miniatures and borders to fit certain historical circumstances and to express particular devotions. This study enriches our understanding of each of the manuscripts in the group and traces the development of a distinctive pattern of patronage that influenced the visual arts in Milan for over a century." Add to basketBlue cloth, gilt and blue cover device, top edge gilt, 8vo, 26 x 17 cm, 262 pp, 128 colour plates. An elegant facsimile edition, with 128 exquisite plates in colours and gold reproducing the illuminations by Giovannino de Grassi and Luchino Belbello of the 15th century manuscript in the National Library of Florence, accompanied on the facing pages by the explanatory commentary. From the introduction: "The Visconti Hours is the pre-eminent Italian example of the numerous surviving Books of Hours produced during the late Middle Ages, mainly in countries north of Italy for the private devotional use of wealthy lay persons. Books of Hours derive their name from their essential component the Hours of the Virgin, also called the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The supplementary components of these books vary. Many include additional offices (devotional texts) dedicated to the Deity, to saints, to holy events or objects, and to the dead; like the Hours of the Virgin, these offices are divided for recitation at fixed times of the day known as canonical hours. Most Books of Hours contain also a liturgical calendar, the seven Penitential Psalms, a Litany (ritual invocations for the mercy of the Trinity and the intercession of the saints), and Suffrages (prayers to saints especially venerated by the owner of the manuscript). Although the Visconti Hours has no Calendar and Suffrages, it is augmented by a full Psalter, including canticles, hymns, and other prayers which normally follow the Psalms, and therefore belongs to a category of books which are designated Psalter-Hours."
