Hardcover. Condition: New. The ultimate book on furniture designThe Atlas of Furniture Design is the most comprehensive overview of the history of furniture design ever published. The 1,000-page book documents 1,691 objects by over 300 designers and 121 manufacturers, and features more than 2,500 images, from detailed object pho…tographs to historical documentation such as interiors, patents, brochures and reference works in art and architecture. The basis for the Atlas of Furniture Design is the furniture collection held by the Vitra Design Museum, one of the largest of its kind in the world, with more than 7,000 works. The collection is made up of pieces from key periods in design history and by the most significant designers and manufacturers of the past 200 years, including early industrial furniture in bentwood or metal, Art Nouveau and Secessionist objects, works by such protagonists of classical modernism as Le Corbusier, Gerrit Rietveld, Charlotte Perriand and Marcel Breuer, postwar figures such as Finn Juhl, Eero Saarinen and Achille Castiglioni, and postmodern and contemporary designers like Philippe Starck, Marcel Wanders and Konstantin Grcic, as well as the estates of design legends such as Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton, Alexander Girard, George Nelson and others.Several years in the making, the Atlas of Furniture Design has employed a team of over 60 authors and features in-depth essays providing sociocultural and design-historical context to the history of furniture design, as well as 550 detailed texts accompanying key objects. The book is enriched by a detailed annex containing designer biographies, bibliographies, a glossary of manufacturers and an index, along with information graphics offering a complementary visual approach to the history of furniture design. The Atlas of Furniture Design is both an encyclopedic reference tool and an indispensable resource for collectors, scholars and experts, as well as a beautifully designed object that speaks to design enthusiasts around the globe.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 5th Printing. Text in English and Danish. 140 pp. Slight edge wear and scrathing to dust jacket Yellowed page and dust jacket edges. Arne Jacobsen (1902-71) was one of the architects and designers who - with designers Poul Henningsen, Hans J Wegner, Finn Juhl, Borge M…ogensen Verner Panton and Poul Kjarholm - made Danish Design world famous. This book follows Arne Jacobsen from the early years. It starts with a dream about The House of the Future and about new ways of living and working. It ends nearly two generations later with major buil- dings in Denmark, Germany and England where buildings, gardening, furnishing and lighting, create a feeling of wholeness and identity so rare in today's world. Arne Jacobsen was one of the few creators who inscribed his name in both the history of architecture and design. Yet, even if his works in both fields express the same ideas, the roads which led to them differ. Arne Jacobsen's buildings are described in his drawings down to the most minute detail. This is documented in the thousands of drawings in the collections at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. In stark contrast to this, the drawings of his industrial designs are mostly those which the manufacturers did themselves after the product had been developed - in a process which always took place in close cooperation with model makers, craftsmen and technicians. Arne Jacobsen himself provided, at best, a quick sketch made on a tiny piece of paper. The book gives an insight into both of these processes through interviews with industrialists, technicians, model makers and clients for the big bulilding projects, as well as with architects and designers who worked for Arne Jacobsen. All together, these interviews provide an insight into where the ideas come from, how they are implemented, and how the best of them live on in those who took part in creating them.
