Paperback. Condition: Very Good. One of the most important subjects for any student of engineering to master is the behaviour of materials and structures under load. The way in which they react to applied forces, the deflections resulting and the stresses and strains set up in the bodies concerned are all vital considerations when designing a mechanical component such that it will not fail under predicted load during its service lifetime. All the essential elements of a treatment of these topics are contained within this course of study, starting with an introduction to the concepts of stress and strain, shear force and bending moments and moving on to the examination of bending, shear and torsion in elements such as beams, cylinders, shells and springs. A simple treatment of complex stress and complex strain leads to a study of the theories of elastic failure and an introduction to the experimental methods of stress and strain analysis. More advanced topics are dealt with in a companion volume - Mechanics of Materials 2. Each chapter contains a summary of the essential formulae which are developed in the chapter, and a large number of worked examples which progress in level of difficulty as the principles are enlarged upon. In addition, each chapter concludes with an extensive selection of problems for solution by the student, mostly examination questions from professional and academic bodies, which are graded according to difficulty and furnished with answers at the end. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

"The 1967 Hong Kong riots were large-scale anti-government riots that occurred in Hong Kong during British colonial rule. Beginning as a minor labour dispute, the demonstrations eventually escalated into protests against the colonial government. The protests were partially inspired by successful anti-colonial demonstrations in Portuguese Macau which had occurred a few months prior. . The use of roadside bombs and petrol bombs by demonstrators prompted the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) to raid the demonstrators' strongholds and arrest their leaders. Fifty-one people were killed in the subsequent violence. As many of the bombs were made in pro-Chinese Communist Party (CCP) schools, then governor David Trench decided to close those schools and ban pro-CCP publications in the colony. . The protests occurred in the backdrop of the Cultural Revolution taking place in the People's Republic of China (mainland China), with many of the protesters harboring leftist views and sympathies toward the CCP. After the riots, the British Hong Kong government publicly reflected on its failure to address certain social grievances and carried out major social reforms." . "On 16 May, demonstrators formed the "Committee of Hong Kong and Kowloon Compatriots from All Circles for Struggle Against British Hong Kong Persecution" or "Anti-British Struggle Committee" for short. Yeung Kwong of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Federation of Trade Unions was appointed its chairman. The committee organized and coordinated a series of large demonstrations. Hundreds of supporters from 17 different leftist organizations demonstrated outside Government House, chanting pro-CCP slogans.[12] At the same time, many workers went on strike, with Hong Kong's transport services being disrupted particularly badly." . "More violence erupted on 22 May, with another 167 people being arrested. The rioters began to adopt more sophisticated tactics, such as throwing stones at police officers or police vehicles passing by, before retreating into leftist "strongholds" such as newspaper offices, banks or department stores once the poli.

Map
Very good. Light wear along original folds. Ship with book. Size 11.75 x 14.25 Inches. A rare and intriguing c. 1930 map of British Hong Kong and associated territories, printed locally by Ye Olde Printerie. A Closer Look Covering the British possessions, this map is notable for its detailed coverage of the New Territories, that is, the mountainous peninsula and islands beyond the heavily populated Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. In 1898, the British acquired a 99-year lease on these territories, which were demarcated from Qing China at the Sham Chun (Shenzhen) River. This map highlights roads and railways that connected a string of villages in the New Territories with the main core of the colony around Victoria Harbour. It also records additional waterways, mountain ranges, islands, and coastal features like bays, channels, harbors, and coves. Kowloon-Canton Railway One of the more important elements of the map is the Kowloon-Canton Railway, built in the years after Britain's acquisition of the New Territories and completed in 1910. The railroad connected Hong Kong to Canton (Guangzhou) and other parts of Guangdong Province and, eventually, extended throughout China. Stations were located on or near the border at Sham Chun (Shenzhen), which today has sprawled to a population roughly double that of Hong Kong, and at Lo Wu, where a ferry was also operated for shorter-distance cross-border travel. In the early Cold War period, the line saw limited use due to the restrictions on trade and travel between Hong Kong and the mainland. However, since the late 1970s and Hong Kong return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, the railway has been upgraded and has seen considerable use. In 2007, the railway was merged into the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR), allowing for seamless travel throughout the Special Administrative Region. Kowloon Walled City Another notable feature is the Kowloon Walled City, here as 'Kowloon City,' situated near the center. The origins of the walled city date back to the Song Dynasty, and the area was used for government offices and fortifications for many centuries afterward. After the arrival of the British on Hong Kong Island in the early 1840s, the Qing government used the Kowloon Walled City to monitor the nearby foreign presence. Even still, when Kowloon was ceded to Britain in 1860, and the New Territories leased in 1898, the Qing were allowed to continue to station officials there, along with a population of several hundred civilians, and the walled city became an enclave of Chinese sovereign territory. Unsurprisingly, this occasionally caused tensions, as when British troops raided the area in 1899, suspecting it was being used as a base for resistance to their rule over Hong Kong and Kowloon. The fortified area remained a sticking point between Britain and China for the next century, until the eve of Hong Kong's handover to Chinese sovereignty. As the British were unsure of what to do with it but reluctant to grant the Chinese government full control over the enclave, the area became home to many squatters and refugees from conflicts in the mainland, as well as a hotbed of organized crime and drugs. The Japanese destroyed the wall during World War II to build Kai Tak Airport, but the layout and name of the area remained. After the war, the area's population skyrocketed as refugees fled the Chinese Civil War on the mainland, likely making it the most densely populated neighborhood in an already very densely populated city. Ramshackle apartment buildings were set up with no safety standards, leading to many fires and the risk of buildings collapsing. Structures were lined up with no space between them, and residents built passageways across roofs and between buildings so that one could transit the entire 2.6-hectare area without ever touching the ground. Less so than proper streets, groups of buildings were separated by alleyways so narrow that residents could shake hands with their neighbors on the other.

Map
Very good. Slight wear on original folds. Size 26 x 29.75 Inches. An exceptional 1945 detail map of Victoria Harbor and City, Hong Kong, issued by the U.S. Army's 64th Engineer Base Topographic Battalion near the end of World War II, when Hong Kong was still suffering under the Japanese Occupation. A Closer Look The map is based on earlier British military and colonial surveys dating to the 1920s and early 1930s. Coverage embraces Victoria and Kowloon, collectively the most urbanized part of Hong Kong, stretching from Belcher's Bay to Causeway Bay, inland to include the Peak, and north incorporating Kowloon as far as Tai Min Tin / Waterloo Road. It is meticulously accurate, detailing topography, individual buildings, piers, municipal buildings, forests, railroad lines, major businesses, and more. The Occupation of Hong Kong During World War II, Hong Kong was under Imperial Japanese occupation, which began on December 25, 1941, following the city's surrender after 18 days of fierce fighting. The Occupation lasted until the end of World War II (1939 - 1945) spanning 3 years, 8 months. The Battle of Hong Kong was among the first battles of the Pacific War, coinciding with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Despite strong port-side defense capabilities, Hong Kong's garrison, composed of British, Indian, and Canadian units along with Auxiliary Defence Units and the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps, was quickly overwhelmed, leading to the surrender of the colony. The Japanese Occupation was marked by martial law and severe human rights abuses, including brutality, famine, malnourishment, and sickness in internment camps. The Occupation ended with the surrender of Japan following the dropping of Atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. British troops returned to Hong Kong on August 30, 1945. Publication History and Census This map was created by the U.S. Army's 64th Engineer Base Topographic Battalion in 1945, likely shortly before Japan's surrender on August 30. Rare. Its extreme rarity may be accounted for by the fact that the war ended shortly after it was issued, making the map redundant. We have not identified any other surviving examples.

Map
Very good. Size 29.75 x 19.75 Inches. An amusing 1982 pictorial map of Hong Kong by local illustrator and historian Tom Briggs. It highlights the cosmopolitan nature of 'old Hong Kong,' while also, perhaps self-consciously, revealing the chasm between the British elite and the local Chinese who made up most of the city's population. A Closer Look The map is oriented towards the south (for the benefit of Australian readers, according to the compass rose), with Kowloon in the foreground and Hong Kong Island in the background. Local businesses, government buildings, rail and ferry stations, and various attractions are advertised. Distinctive local sites and traditions are also emphasized, such as the Star Ferry between Hong Kong Island and Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon, the noonday gun, the peak tram, the Cross-Harbour Tunnel (opened a decade earlier), various institutions of British imperial power, and the old Kai Tak Airport, famous for the close approaches of jetliners to the high-rise apartments of Kowloon. Seemingly with a wink from its author, the map gives a very selective view of Hong Kong, focusing on banks, tailors, bars, night clubs (with many topless women), travel agencies, the Happy Valley Racecourse, restaurants, and other leisure activities. Most of the figures appear to be British or otherwise foreign and male, reflecting the interests of the intended audience. British or Chinese? Acerbic allusions made to Britain's eleventh-hour efforts to reform Hong Kong's imperial administration, such as the visiting delegation from the 'mother of Parliaments' at bottom left. Briggs also informs the viewer to buy the poster now, as 'it may be smaller after 1997.' This comment reveals anxiety over the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty, which was a major issue in British-Chinese relations at the time, culminating in Margaret Thatcher's visit to China in 1982 and the Sino-British Joint Declaration in 1984. Though they were ceded at the point of a gun, Hong Kong Island and Kowloon were indisputably British territory under international law; however, the New Territories had originally been leased in 1898 for 99 years, meaning that 1997 was a 'deadline' for those territories to return to Chinese sovereignty. The People's Republic, however, demanded that a plan to return Hong Kong and Kowloon also be developed as a precondition for allowing British firms market access in mainland China. The handover was made more palatable to the British with the promise that Hong Kong's system of law, laissez-faire capitalism, and civil liberties would not be immediately altered, and that local Hong Kongers would govern the territory as a 'special administrative region' within the P.R.C., under an arrangement known as 'one country, two systems.' The recent opening of China is also referenced at bottom-right, where readers are enjoined to 'see the real China' by taking the Central Kingdom Express, a service that allowed linkages through to Europe; such a journey would have been nearly impossible a decade prior. Related political tensions in the city are alluded to, such as the Brit who proudly claims to own a piece of the most expensive land in the world and is denounced by a local Communist sympathizer as a 'capitalist landlord pig,' an echo of the spillover from China's Cultural Revolution (1966 - 1976) and entrenched racial wealth disparities that had led to upheaval in the colony in prior years. Briggs even has fun with the lauded local court system, with a judge noting that 'the verdict hardly matters by the time you've paid for your defence.' Publication History and Census This map was drawn by Tom Briggs and colleagues at the Great Wall Poster Company in 1981, for publication and distribution in 1982. It is quite rare. We are not aware of its existence in any institutional collections, and it has only been on the market once in recent years.

Map
Very good. Manuscript and pastedown updates. Original centerfold. Size 27.5 x 40.5 Inches. A detailed 1929 British Admiralty nautical chart or maritime map of Hong Kong Harbor and Kowloon. The map covers from eastern Lan Tau Island to Kowloon and from Tsing Yi (??, Chung Hue) to Victoria (Hong Kong Central, Sai Wan, Sai Ying Pun, and Sheung Wan. It exhibits copious c. 1930 manuscript updates in the vicinity of Kowloon, including a heavily annotated pastedown. Urban Development This map is noteworthy for being one of the few nautical charts of Hong Kong to exhibit extensive detail regarding the urban development of Hong Kong Victoria and Kowloon. In Hong Kong it notes land reclamation projects in Central and in Sai Wan, both then at the limits of the urban development. The map identifies factories, government offices, civil facilities, the Queen's College, the cricket grounds, markets and military instillations. One site 'APC' is identified in red manuscript, possibly 'Asia Pacific Cargo.' A pier has been added in Kowloon. A manuscript note suggests that the buoy locations of the west of the Man of War anchorages are incorrect. Census and Publication History This chart was originally published in 1903 under the title Hong Kong Harbour - West . The chart name changed in 1920 to the present Hong Kong Waters West . It is based upon original survey work completed by the Royal Navy under Captains W. U. Moore and Morris H. Smith, and Lieutenants P. L. Hancock an F. A. Reyne. The original survey work was completed between 188 and 1893, with update surveys completed in 1902 and 1911. The present example exhibits minor updates to 1929, as well as a pastedown containing manuscript revisions and annotations to about 1930. Represents Admiralty chart no. 3280. A scarce item. We have identified examples in the British Museum and the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. It does not appear in the OCLC. No other examples in any edition are known. References: OCLC 176920917.
