Format in-4°( 30,8 x 24 cm )( 1640 gr ). ------- 256 pages richement illustrées. ************************* C'est très récemment que le nom de Joze Plecnik - plus que celui de tout autre artiste slovène ou yougoslave - a pénétré dans la conscience culturelle de l'Europe et du monde. En effet, au vingtième siècle, diverses circonstances ont changé et ont permis de mettre en lumière, temporairement du moins, les apports artistiques de régions traditionnellement considérées comme marginales. Celles-ci n'étaient influencées, depuis des siècles, que par certains courants secondaires, dérivés des grands mouvements artistiques nés dans les centres culturels d'Italie, de France ou d'Allemagne. Le modernisme, avec ses avant-gardes nombreuses et variées, a fait éclater cette image pourtant solidement ancrée dans les esprits et a contribué à bouleverser les hiérarchies établies sur la carte européenne de l'art. Les mouvements d'avant-garde sont apparus de façon inattendue. Dans les milieux artistiques traditionnellement peu dynamiques, leur nombre et leur force ont profondément modifié les rapports, ils ont détruit les anciens schémas. Dans tous les domaines artistiques, musique ou théâtre, littérature ou architecture, ils ont ouvert la voie à de nombreux artistes qui jusque là s'étaient peu affirmés et les ont projetés au centre de l'attention culturelle du monde entier. Les noms de Edvard Munch, Alvaro Aalto, Jan Sibelius, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Tristan Tzara et bien d'autres - Ivan Metrovié et Joze Plenik ne sont certes pas les moindres - illustrent ce constat. Quelles sont, en fait, les données nouvelles dans les rapports artistiques entre les grandes nations d'Europe et les petits pays? Certes, une meilleure connaissance et une diffusion plus rapide des informations relatives aux événements artistiques favorisent un échange d'idées plus intense, mais elles laissent intacts, ou presque, les lignes directrices et les schémas traditionnels. Il s'agit donc d'un phénomène plus profond, d'un processus qu'il faut sans doute mettre en relation avec le nouveau visage des entités nationales du XIXe siècle, des grandes nations comme des petits pays. De son temps déjà, le poète slovène France Preseren (1800-1849) avait été le porte-parole du sentiment national qui se réveillait alors, le représentant d'une petite élite intellectuelle qui avait acquis une véritable conscience nationale et surtout culturelle. Plecnik's sacral designs are little known, yet among the most perfectly realized examples of his Modernist vision, with streamlined yet luxe forms, richly though unostentatiously encrusted in jewels. This lavishly printed book was published upon the recent discovery of several rare examples of his handiwork from the 30's through the 50's - 41 specimens beautifully displayed in both full and close-up color plates, with full annotations for each chalice on facing pages. In excellent condition save for some light edgewear.
