Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Oversized hardcover, still sealed in publisher's original shrinkwrap. Gentle rubbing to tips of board corners. -- 464 pages. This multi-author volume consolidates recent progress in the analysis of nonlocal partial differential equations, particularly those involving the fractional Laplacian and related integro-differential operators. It offers both theoretical advancements and practical methodologies applicable across several branches of mathematics, physics, and engineering. The work opens with Claudia Bucur's accessible overview of fractional Sobolev spaces and the fractional Laplacian, providing foundational context for non-experts while still serving as a rigorous reference for advanced readers. Each subsequent section explores a specific subject, showcasing technical results, methodological innovations and open problems. Chen and Zhang's chapter on heat kernels for non-symmetric nonlocal operators is directly relevant to stochastic processes and anomalous diffusion, offering sharp estimates and stability results essential for probabilistic modeling. Da Lio's study of fractional harmonic maps connects nonlocal operators to geometric variational problems, highlighting regularity results critical for understanding geometric flows and manifold-valued functions. Danielli and Salsa's extensive treatment of obstacle problems involving the fractional Laplacian addresses both static and time-dependent formulations, which are pertinent to mathematical finance, fluid dynamics, and elasticity theory, and features optimal regularity results and detailed boundary behavior analysis. Dipierro and Valdinoci's work on nonlocal minimal surfaces emphasizes quantitative estimates and phenomena such as boundary stickiness, which are crucial in materials science and image processing. Rupert Frank provides a meticulous review of eigenvalue bounds for fractional Schrödinger operators, including sharp inequalities and asymptotics, which are central in quantum mechanics and spectral theory. González's chapter on conformal fractional Laplacians bridges nonlocal theory with conformal geometry, offering analytic formulations for the fractional Yamabe problem and connecting scattering theory with geometric PDEs. Kassmann's contribution elucidates the probabilistic interpretation of nonlocal operators through jump processes, integrating analytic and stochastic techniques and offering regularity estimates in Hölder spaces that are applicable to both pure and applied problems. The chapter by Kuusi, Mingione & Sire on the fractional p-Laplacian delivers refined existence and regularity results using modern potential-theoretic tools, addressing operators with measurable coefficients that are highly relevant to nonlinear analysis. Ros-Oton advances the discussion with results on boundary regularity and Pohozaev-type identities, demonstrating how fine estimates enable nonexistence and uniqueness theorems in critical domains. Molica Bisci's use of variational and topological methods to establish existence and multiplicity of solutions for periodic nonlocal problems is particularly strong in applications to nonlinear dynamics and bifurcation theory, using techniques such as Morse theory and pseudo-index arguments. Patrizi closes the volume with a detailed analysis of crystal dislocation dynamics through nonlocal models, highlighting multiscale modeling techniques that link microscopic and macroscopic behaviors via homogenization and viscosity solution theory. Academically, the book excels in unifying diverse subfields under the framework of nonlocality, illustrating how nonlocal models arise naturally in geometric analysis, stochastic processes, variational calculus, and physical modeling. Overall, the volume offers a robust synthesis of theory, methods, and applications, serving as both a state-of-the-art compendium and a practical toolkit for ongoing and future investigations in the field.

Text in English and Finnish. 26 plates. 607 pp. The Baltic-Finnish region ? from Estonia in the south to Finnish and is one Russian Karelia in the north of those areas where ancient epic survived long enough to be recorded. The folk poetry of the Finnish peoples made its major impact on the world with the publication of the Kalevala in the middie of the nineteenth century. The Kalevala, which came to be seen as the 'national epic' of the Finns, is in reality a collection of epic fragments edited and arranged by Elias Lönnrot into a series of loosely linked narrative sequences. The main body of authentic material that forms the basis of Finnish folk poetry studies remains almost completely unknown outside Finland; even there, it is readily available only to scholars. The need for access to authentic specimens of folk poetry has been felt all the more acutely in recent years as interest in oral tradition has grown. It is this need that the present Anthology is designed to meet. The editors have attempted to produce a work that will satisfy the requirements of scholars and students and give pleasure to the general reader. The choice and arrangement of the poems illustrate the main historical stages of development?from ancient myths about the origin of the universe to an eighteenth-century elegy sung to army recruits as they left home. The poems bring alive the vanished world of the hunters and fishermen of Finnish and Russian Karelia, and of the serf bound to the land in Ingria. The poems take the reader back into an age when shamanism was still prevalent and show how Christianity slowly replaced the old beliefs. Above all, the poems remind us of the power of the human imagination and of man's need for art, a need that survives and finds a rich response even in the most primitive and deprived conditions.

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: New. 312 pages. How do we Explore our Future? comprises 20 leading Finnish futurists revealing their practical and theoretical knowledge of futures studies. The texts are a cross-section of twenty years of futures research. The writers present methods and their practical applications, demonstrating various interactions between futures research and other fields of science. The book samples a large variety of modern futures studies methodology including sections on evolutionary and systems thinking, expert-based knowledge evaluation and time-series based methods like Delphi and Causal Layered Analysis (CLA). The book also deals with communicative futures methods such as futures workshops and scenario work. In addition, it includes three chapters focusing on newer methods such as the anticipation of Weak Signals and Black Swans. This book is a comprehensive reading for all those interested in futures studies theory and its practical applications. As a fundamental publication of futures studies methods this book is also suitable for lecture support material for universities. The purpose of the book is to familiarize the reader with the idea of futures studies and the basic methods of futures as a scientific discipline. We hope that the readers will find this publication and its arguments a stimulating trigger, launching creative argumentation about our responsibility to imagine alternative futures. This book, How Do We Explore Our Futures?, is an English edition based on the 3rd revised edition (2013) of the Finnish 1993 original Miten tutkimme tulevaisuutta? The book will be published in English as an answer to increasing international demand for Finnish original contributions to the fields of Futures Studies and Foresight.
