[Geneva], Apud haeredes Eustathij Vignon, 1595. £300 4to, (viii) 920 (lii), ¶4 A-Zz8 2A-2K8 2L4 2M-2P8 2Q2. Roman and Italic letter, some Greek. Printer s device on title page, decorated initials, head- and tailpieces. Ms. annotations and autographs on t-p (Laurentius Burnell? Fraudir Rindaid?), occasional marginalia. Light age yellowing, some waterstaining affecting outer foot margins and lower gutters. In C19th half calf over wooden boards covered in marbled paper, gilt title to spine. This is the unequalled Lambin s (Lambinus) edition of the works of Plautus, which originally appeared in 1576. The celebrity of Lambinus in almost every classical work which he edited, has already been frequently noticed. Of this admirable edition, Lambinus lived to finish only the first twelve comedies; but his colleague, Helius, professor of Greek, completed the work, partly by transcribing what remained in Lambinus s hand-writing on the subsequent comedies, and partly by the insertion of his own notes, and emendations of the text. In forming the edition, many MSS. And ancient publications were consulted . In this excellent edition of Plautus , says Harwood, Lambinus hath manifested great learning and critical sagacity T. F. Dibdin, An Introduction to the Knowledge of Rare and Valuable Editions of the Greek and Latin Classics, 1804, pp. 299-300. Denys Lambin, or Dionysius Lambinus (1520-1572), won a wide reputation by his great editions of Latin authorsHis knowledge of Cicero and the older Latin writers, as well as the Augustan poets, has never been surpassed and rarely equalled J. E. Sandys, A Short History of Classical Scholarship, 1915, pp. 220-21. GLN-3810; Adams P1512. Denis Lambin (Latinized as Dionysius Lambinus; 1520 September 1572) was a French classical scholar. Lambin was born at Montreuil, Pas-de-Calais. Having devoted several years to classical studies during a residence in Italy, he was invited to Paris in 1550 to fill the professorship of Latin in the Collège de France, which he soon afterwards exchanged for that of Greek. His lectures were frequently interrupted by his ill-health and the religious disturbances of the time. His death is said to have been caused by his apprehension that he might share the fate of his friend Pierre de la Ramée, who had been killed in the massacre of St Bartholomew. His chief editions are: Horace (1561), Lucretius (1563), Cicero (1566), Cornelius Nepos (1569), Demosthenes (1570), completing the unfinished work of Guillaume Morel, & Plautus (1576). Andreas Wechelus (fr. André Wechel, died 1581) was a printer and bookseller active in Paris from 1554 to 1573 and in Frankfurt from 1573 to 1581. In 1554, Andreas Wechelus took over the printing office of his father, Chrétien Wechel, on Saint-Jean-de-Beauvais Street. He continued the editorial work initiated by his father and printed texts in Greek, notably the works of Xenophon and Lucian), as well as those of humanists like Jean-Antoine de Baïf and Pierre de Ronsard. In all likelihood, Wechelus was a supporter of the Reformation, but his friends were German Lutherans, rather than French Calvinists. Nonetheless, he printed the works of Petrus Ramus and Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon. In 1572, Wechelus escaped the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre thanks to his tenant Hubert Languet, a representative of Augustus, Elector of Saxony. Not long after, Wechelus left Paris for Frankfurt, where he died in 1581. Early imprint (first was 1561). RAREE1577HPRX 11/24 - HK2182.

Pastorello, L'epistolario Manuziano. Inventario cronologico-analitico, 1483-1597, (Firenze, 1957), p. 15, no. 274 (1578 ed.). SECOND EDITION. The first edition, shared between the printers Gilles Maugier and Jean de Heuqueville, was issued in 1578 in two different formats: in octavo with a separate pagination for Manuzio's Praefationes and in small octavo with the same collation as the present edition, of which are also extant copies with Heuqueville's address. This collection assembles numerous prefatory and ?familiar' letters of three great French scholars: Marc-Antoine Muret (1526-1575), Denis Lambin (ca. 1520-1572), and Louis Le Roy (ca. 1510-1577). Some of the Muret-Lambin correspondence had already been published in the letter collection edited by Giovanni Michele Bruto at Lyon in 1561. The letters by Le Roy were first printed at Paris in 1559.Added are the prefatory letters by Paolo Manuzio (1512-1574), which had already been printed in Venice in 1558 MURET:SECOND EDITION. In this anthology is printed for the first time a choice of 22 letters (some prefatory) by Muret, which were not included in the volume issued a year later by Muret himself at Paris. The volume opens with a series of letters that Muret wrote to Denis Lambin in 1558/9. [end of 1559] (leaf Aiiiv)id. Mauri Archinti' to recto and casemark to verso of fep. Very good copy of two Aldine editions, intended as companion volumes, of Cicero's rhetorical works, here issued for the first time with a commentary by the humanist Denis Lambin. Despite the imprimatur 'Ex Bibliotheca Aldina', these works were printed by the Torresani, heirs to Andrea, Aldus's 'socerus' and associate; these were also their first Ciceronian editions. The Torresani editions have been praised as 'handsome, almost all rare, andkept in much esteem' (Renouard, 'Notice', 72). Due to their excellence, they were either attributed to Aldus and his heirs or mistaken for counterfeits even by notable bibliographers until the mid-C19 (Bernoni, 'Dei Torresani', 128). One of the most influential figures of classical antiquity, Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43BC) put his legal skills to the service of politics with speeches which became landmarks of forensic oratory. Defined by Quintilian as 'eloquence itself', his copious prose production occupied a fundamental place in medieval syllabi. Subsequent to the rediscovery of further texts, including the letters, by scholars like Petrarch, Cicero contributed to forging the Latin style of the Renaissance and its ideas on political theory (e.g., Republicanism), rhetoric (e.g., the principles of argument, eloquence and invention) and philosophy (e.g., Stoicism). The first work in this sammelband includes his greatly influential 'ad Herennium', by then presented as probably spurious ('incerto auctore'), as well as 'De inventione' and 'Topica' (how to construct arguments in structure and content), and 'De partitione oratoria' on oratory techniques. The second work begins with 'De oratore', an immensely influential analysis of how a good orator should construct persuasive arguments which should however be driven by sound ethical principles. There follow 'Orator', a description of the perfect orator integrating observations in previous works, and 'De claris oratoribus', a history of eloquence through individual figures including Pericles and Solon. Denis Lambin's commentariesto 'Rhetorica' and to the first book of 'De oratore'appended to each part bear a separate t-p, pagination and collation, but were not intended for separate publication. Lambin (1520-72) was a French humanist who taught Latin and Greek at the Collège de France. He was praised for his philological precision but also criticised for being 'too concerned with trivialities of language at the expense not only of philosophical issues but also of practical matters of politics and individual conduct' (Salmon, 'Renaissance and Revolt', 50).
