Collation: A single leaf from the Caert-Thresoor, pp. 85 and 86: the map of Ormus on the recto, the Dutch description of the kingdom of Ormus on the verso. The map shows the island and city of Ormus at the mouth of the Persian Gulf with the neighbouring coasts of Persia and Arabia. In this first state the map is presented without the framework of longitude and latitude that was added to the plate for the later editions; the c. 1610 example reproduced in Sultan Al Qasimi's The Gulf in Historic Maps is such a later, gridded state from the edition of Petrus Bertius. Edition: First edition, first state, without the graticule of longitude and latitude. Language: Dutch (the complete Beschryvinghe van Arabia, pp. 88 to 90). Format: Copperplate engraving, c. 9 x 12 cm, on a leaf from the oblong octavo atlas (p. 87), with the letterpress description on pp. 88 to 90. Colouring: Uncoloured, as issued. Collation: One map with its accompanying text, on two leaves from the Caert-Thresoor: the single map ARABIA on p. 87, and the complete Dutch Beschryvinghe van Arabia on pp. 88, 89 and 90. The map shows the whole peninsula between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. The Tropic of Cancer cuts the map in a northern and a southern part, with Ayaman above it and Arabia Foelix below; present-day Yemen is called Zibit after its major harbour on the Red Sea. Just under 23 1/2 degrees are Consida al Ziden (Jeddah) and Mecha (Mecca), and above them Medina talnabi, with the note ubi Mahumetis sepulchrum visitur, where the tomb of Muhammad is visited. The southernmost point is Aden; on the Gulf side Ormus, Mascate (Muscat) and the Persicus Sinus are marked, with Arabia deserta and Arabia Petrea to the north. The Dutch description on pp. 88 to 90 treats the three Arabias, the Bedouin and the origin of the Saracens, Mecca and the birth of Muhammad, Medina Talnabi with the prophet's tomb, mount Sinai and Petra, the cities Zidem, Zibit and Aden, the caravans to India, Cairo and Damascus, and the capture of Aden by the Turks in 1538. Condition: A strong, dark impression on toned paper, the letterpress showing through as usual. Wide margins; some chipping and small marginal defects at the extremities, far from the printed border. Edition: First edition, first state, without the graticule of longitude and latitude. Language: Dutch (the Beschryvinghe vande Roode Zee, p. 108). Format: Copperplate engraving, c. 9 x 12 cm, on a leaf from the oblong octavo atlas (p. 109), with the letterpress description on p. 108. Colouring: Uncoloured, as issued. Collation: Two leaves from the Caert-Thresoor: the Dutch Beschryvinghe vande Roode Zee on p. 108, and the map MARE RUBRUM on p. 109, with the letterpress header De Roode Zee and, beginning on its verso (p. 110), the description of Madagascar. The map shows the whole sea from Sues (Suez) and Toro at the head to the strait, with Aden and Zeyla beyond it, the compass directions named in the borders (Septentrio at the foot, so with the north at the lower left). The emphasis is entirely on the sea and the shore: the shoals, reefs and channels of the fairway are marked throughout, the island of Camaran lies mid-sea, and the coasts carry a wealth of Portuguese names. On the Arabian side are Gidda al Ziden et Iuda (Jeddah), Mecha, Zibit and Mocha, with the note Agra de Medina inhabet ubi Mahumetis sepulchrum, the place where Muhammad is buried; on the African side Mazuam (Massawa), Suaquem (Suakin) and the Costa de Suaquem, among many more places than appear on, for example, Ortelius's Turcicum Imperium of 1570. The Dutch text on p. 108 describes the Red Sea between Asia and Africa, the Sinus Arabicus or Mare Rubrum, the redness of its sandy bottom, the crossing of the children of Israel, the testimony of Lodovicus Vartomannus (Varthema), the island of Chameran with its salt, the pilgrims of Mecca, Toro and Suez with the galleys the Turks keep there, and the coasts down to Abex and Melinde.
