Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. XVIIe siècle. Rare book that belongs as much to the history of French spirituality as to the history of the illustrated devotional book, this 1693 Paris printing of the *Vies des Prophetes* opens a window onto the austere, intellectually vibrant world of Port-Royal. Though the title page is anonymous, the text is attributed by the Bibliothèque nationale de France to Nicolas Fontaine, secretary to Le Maistre de Sacy and one of the solitaires of Port-Royal the same milieu that produced the celebrated Bible de Royaumont. Each prophetic life, from Elijah and Elisha through the major and minor prophets, is accompanied by spiritual reflections drawn from the Church Fathers, and is introduced by a finely engraved copperplate vignette and decorative initial, making this a carefully produced book of devotion rather than a routine pious imprint. For collectors of Jansenist material, seventeenth-century biblical vulgarisation, or early modern French illustrated books, this is a genuinely elusive survival. This is the 1693 Paris edition published by Charles Robustel at the Palmier on the rue Saint-Jacques, a later printing of a work first issued in Lyon in 1685 not a first edition, but a scarce and bibliographically significant Paris issue in its own right. The sole mark of early ownership is a particularly attractive one: an eighteenth-century manuscript table of contents in brown ink, ruled by hand on the front pastedown or free endpaper, listing each prophet with the corresponding page number in a fluent cursive hand a quiet, personal record of use that carries no name but speaks eloquently of the books place in an early readers devotional life. The binding is contemporary full brown calf over cords, with five raised bands and six compartments richly tooled in gilt with small ornamental lozenges, corner fleurons, and dotted rules, the title lettered directly in gilt on the spine; the boards are plain, without arms or supralibros. Structurally the binding is tired: the upper headcap is torn away, the lower headcap crushed and split, with loss of leather at the head and tail of the spine exposing the cords and boards, the joints rubbed and partly open, the edges and corners worn through to the boards, and general scuffing across the covers yet the spine gilding remains legible and decorative. The interior is considerably sounder than the exterior: the laid paper is heavily browned and dust-soiled at the edges, with foxing and light dampstains on the first leaves and occasional dog-eared margins, but the text is clean, the impression firm, and the engravings well struck; the text block holds, though a few gatherings at the front are loosened. Orders are shipped within 24 hours of purchase in carefully chosen, well-protected packaging suited to the age and fragility of the book. Questions are always welcome please do not hesitate to enquire. …

In December 1942 Fidelity, with T Company, 40 Commando aboard, joined Convoy ON 154. The convoy was attacked by U-boats from 27 December while north of the Azores. On 29 December Fidelity, suffering from engine problems, fell out of the convoy. She launched her aircraft as an anti-submarine patrol while repairs took place. During this time her aircraft reported lifeboats to the southwest and her landing craft was sent to pick them up. These were 44 men from Empire Shackleton, the convoy commodore's ship. During the night Fidelity was making 5 knots towards the Azores, but came under attack twice. She was fired on by U-225, and later by U-615. Both U-boats were driven off when Fidelity fired back. On 30 December she was found by U-435, under the command of Siegfried Strelow and was torpedoed twice. Strelow observed the sinking, and estimated about 300 survivors in the water, but when he made his report later he was asked "whether their destruction in the prevailing weather can be counted on". This was some months after BdU's infamous Laconia Order, instructing U-boat commanders not to assist survivors in any way, and regarded at the Nuremberg trials as a tacit encouragement to ensure there were none. At the time of her sinking Fidelity had on board some 369 souls. All were lost. Contains 128 pp with monochrome archive photographs and some maps throughout. Feint crease line to the top front corner and in Very Good condition, no dust wrapper as issued. Member of the P.B.F.A. WORLD WAR II (Second). …

Add to basketsoft cover. Condition: fine. first edition.

Original edition of this important scientific relationship due to the French astronomer Guillaume Joseph Hyacinthe Jean-Baptiste The Gentil of the Galaisière (1725-1792). The latter embarked on the order of the Academy of Sciences for India to observe the passage of Venus on the disk of the Sun. He left Brest on March 26, 1760 aboard the Berryer, a vessel of fifty guns of the East India Company, and arrived on July 10 at the Ile-de-France (Mauritius), hoping to find another ship that would sail for India. Unable to reach Pondicherry because of the conflict with the English, he made some observations in Mauritius and decided to wait for the next passage of Venus eight years later. Thus his scientific journey will last in the end eleven and a half years. He then makes the most of his long stay and travels through India and the Indian Ocean from Madagascar to Manila, collecting specimens of natural sciences, geographical positions or ethnological evidence to study the tides, monsoons, natural history, astronomy and Indian religion. His work contains many valuable information on Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion and the Philippines, details on the mornings of the Indians on the Coromandel coast, on the astronomy of the Brahms, astronomical observations made in Pondicherry, remarks on navigation through the Strait of Malacca. He managed to reach Pondicherry where the governor had him build an observatory to which Le Gentil will devote himself more than a year. The rich iconography of the book consists of 27 engraved plates and maps dedicated to the collected information and its astronomical observations. Minimal age tanning to the closed text block edges and a Very Good clean and sound condition set. Member of the P.B.F.A. MAURITIUS (Mascarenhas). …

"Le Brun's project for the Galerie d'Apollon is a triumph of mythological decoration, and one of his most powerful works. It reveals the enduring influence of Poussin on Le Brun. The theme of Le Brun's decoration . is Apollo, god of the sun, represented in the effects of light on the hours, months, seasons, elements, and hemispheres. The greatest artists and sculptors of the time contributed to this decoration, under the direction of Le Brun. But. the.work was never completed. It was taken up again . in the nineteenth century by architect Félix Duban and painter Eugène Delacroix . responsible for the design of the center ceiling panel, which does not follow the original ideas of Le Brun." Add to basketCouverture rigide. Condition: Bon. L.A.S., 26 juin 1652, 8p in-4. [557]. …
