Single sheet. (240 x 310 mm). Monochrome lithograph by Henri Lebasque signed in the stone at lower right, printed text in black at lower left and beneath the lithograph. The rare announcement poster for the Théâtre de l'Oeuvre with lithograph by Henri Lebasque. The poster announces two dramas at the Théâtre de l'Oeuvre in rue Tu…rgot, the anonymous 'Le Fils de l'Abbesse' ('Thèse en trois actes et quatre tableaux') and Tristan Bernard's one act 'Le Fardeau de la Liberté'. Although it is not clear which of the dramas - if either - Lebasque is alluding to in his lithograph, he presents a wooded scene with a long-haired figure, apparently naked and seemingly a woman, with outstretched arms being embraced by a dark figure; the central scene is obscured partially by the text of the poster but the out-stretched arms suggest that the embrace is not voluntary. At the foot of the sheet is an advertisement for 'La Critique', a 'Revue Illustrée / Bibliothèque d'Art / Collection d'Affiches' appearing twice a month and edited by George Bans.

Published to promote War Bonds, raising money for the reconstruction of France after World War One, when damage was estimated 125 billion francs. This moving poster depicting a mother, calmly sitting with her children whil…e men work in the background rebuilding, surrounded by the smoking chimneys of factories, encouraging subscription through the vision of getting the country up and running again, in every area. The display of a mother breastfeeding her baby would probably not have been tolerated in a British propaganda poster, but the French were more relaxed. Henri Lebasque [1865 - 1937] was a post impressionist painter associated with Matisse, Rouault, Derain and Dufy. As well as his paintings, he produced decorations for the theatre of the Champs-Elysà es and the Transatlantique ocean liner; this is the only poster which I have been able to trace as designed by him.

J'ai fait du tableau de figures et je crois qu…'il y en a beaucoup qui vous plairont.Il va maintenant partir pour Grenoble puis Collioure .au beau soleil, et au bord de la mer. Je m'en réjouis fort pour mes rhumatismes, et pour etaller (sic) de la peinture sur la toile. Je ne connais pas le pays il paraît que c'est très beau. (.) J'espère y faire une bonne saison de travail.Il termine en annonçant l'envoi d'une carte-reçu pour permettre de retirer deux tableaux d'une exposition.

Lettre autographe signée à son "cher docteur" (possiblement le docteur Louis Brocq, mécène et ami de Henri Lebasque). 2 pages et demi in-8. 1935. Du côté du viaduc d'Auteuil. Il suppose que son ami doit parfois venir "du côté du viaduc d'Auteuil, près duquel… je suis comme vous le savez provisoirement niché !". Il espère sa venue dans son atelier au 3 rue Fantin-Latour. "Ayant tant de choses à vous dire depuis ma soudaine disparition de l'année dernière. Revenu il y a peu à Paris, j'ai voulu prendre part à l'organisation du salon d'Automne au Grand-Palais. J'y ai pris froid et cette satanée bronchite qui me guette toujours m'a obligé de garder la chambre. Je vais mieux. C'est fini, mais je sors peu". Influencé par Camille Pissarro, l'uvre d'Henri Lebasque (paysages, paysages animés, nus, intérieurs) relève du postimpressionnisme.
