Es ist bekannt, dass er nach manchen Umwegen an dieses Ziel gelangte eine lange Zeit manichäischer Spekulation und eine kurze, aber nicht minder bedeutsame als Anhänger der akademischen Skepsis musste er durchlaufen, ehe sein glühendes Verlangen nach philosophischer Erkenntnis in den Schriften der Platoniker ein Genüge fand.
