Lexicon after the plates lists data on 6000 miniaturists, thus a very useful reference. Internally Good+, somewhat shaken, but clean and crisp, especially the color plates. Binding has old clear tape along outer hinges and is missing a small piece at the top of the spine. Quite servicable if you are inclined.

Frontispiece is a colour plate with tissue guard showing King George III by Richard Cosway, and 74 further illustrations (plates pasted to pages) in colour with xi, 36 untrimmed pages, no inscriptions, some browning of pages. Undated circa 1900-1910. Stunning book in very good condition with beautiful colour portraits.

Aus der Bibliothek der Gräfin Ledebur. - Miniaturmalerei ist ein Ausdruck für zwei zu unterscheidende Formen der Malerei: Abgeleitet von dem Minium, dem lateinischen Wort für den roten Farbstoff Mennige, versteht man unter Miniatur mittelalterliche Buchillustrationen, die kostbare Handschriften verzieren. Der Einsatz von Minium in Handschriften lässt sich bis zu den ägyptischen Totenbüchern zurückverfolgen. Es wurde als deckende Farbe, einer Art Temperamalerei, auf Pergament aufgetragen. Mit der Möglichkeit der Papierherstellung wurden die Malereien mit deckenden (Gouache) oder lasierenden (Aquarell) Wasserfarben gestaltet. Abgeleitet von minor, dem lateinischen Komparativ von klein, bezeichnet Miniatur ein kleines Bild, in der Regel ein Porträt. Diese Miniaturen wurden meist auf Elfenbein gemalt und mit einem Rahmen gefasst. Unter dieser Bezeichnung ist auch die persische Miniaturmalerei bekannt. Eine der bekannten größeren deutschen Sammlungen von Miniaturen ist die Sammlung Tansey in Verwaltung des Bomann-Museums in Celle.
