SIGNED by the AUTHOR directly on the title page. With a full page presentaion inscription on the first blank page from David Stewart to Chuck Wagner. It fills me with joy that my friend played such a huge role in its construction." (signed) David Stewart. A handsome copy of the first edition. Foreword by Isabel Allende. From the publisher: "'Whereas, We, the citizens of San Francisco . do most heartily approve of the project about to be inaugurated for the establishment of A Free Library in this City, and do pledge to the same our hearty and united support.' With these words, an idea was born in San Francisco, an idea that eventually - well over a century later - achieved its apotheosis in the building of the New Main Public Library. This state-of-the-art cultural institution now stands as a tribute to all those who had the vision to conceive the idea and the energy to nourish this - through eras of triumph and tragedy. With masterful insight, Peter Booth Wiley narrates the fascinating story of this idea, tracing the concept of the library back to the origins of writing and human history itself, through the ages of antiquity to the first American libraries and beyond. to San Francisco. Embroidered into the thread of the main narrative are 25 specially commissioned essays from the Bay Area's leading literary figures, accompanied by original artwork by noted local illustrators.". In the fall of 1966, Eduardo Tirella, close confidant of billionaire Doris Duke, informed the possessive and vindictive heiress that he was leaving her employ as chief designer and art curator to return to Hollywood where his career as a set designer was just catching fire." Minutes later, she crushed him to death under the wheels of a two-ton station wagon as they were leaving Rough Point, her Bellevue Avenue estate in Newport, RI, the storied resort. In a murderous quid-pro-quo, the local police quickly ruled the incident "an unfortunate accident" and Doris began giving a fortune to Newport, restoring 70 colonial-era homes that quickly turned it into a tourist Mecca. In 2018, Lance, who started his career as a cub reporter for The Newport Daily News eight months after Tirella's death, began a re-examination of the case and proved that the mercurial tobacco heiress got away with murder. In a riveting, doggedly researched book with 105 illustrations -- including never-before seen forensic files -- Lance, a five-time Emmy winner, rewrites history and finally restores the reputation of Eduardo Tirella, a gay Renaissance man and war hero whom Duke went to great lengths to erase from the history of her troubled life. Praise for HOMICIDE AT ROUGH POINT: "In his meticulous new tome, Lance tells the untold story of how Doris Duke, the richest woman in America got away with murdering a gay man, her designer and art curator Eduardo Tirella." - Diane Anderson-Minshall, CEO Pride Media in The Advocate. "This book has rocked the world of publishing, it's rocked the world of journalism and true crime junkies are talking about it from Coast to Coast." - Frank Morano WABC RADIO.". From the dust jacket: "George Wingfield was a major figure in Nevada history in the early decades of the twentieth century, and his legacy is felt throughout the state even today. A political and economic titan, he made a fortune in the gold fields of central Nevada and promptly bought a chain of banks and several hotels. Wingfield was a Republican party leader who was also influential among Democrats. His power was legendary and prevailing, as demonstrated by the nearly universal belief that he ran a bipartisan political machine. For a number of years Wingfield was described, without exaggeration, as the owner and operator of the state of Nevada. Some have revered him as Nevada's benevolent "friend." Others have condemned him as a "sagebrush caesar," a man who politically dominated the state "as arbitrarily as the czar ruled Russia." Elizabeth Raymond's biography depicts the man and his times, from his humble birth in Arkansas in 1876 until his death in Reno in 1959. Wingfield became a significant power in Nevada partly because he remained in the state with all of his money instead of leaving as other millionaires had done. His authority became increasingly contentious as his political activities gradually reshaped the state to coincide with his personal tastes and economic interests. His investments gave him national prominence and tremendous influence in a sparsely populated state, where an economic reliance on divorce and gambling was controversial. Ultimately, both political opponents and outside observers came to resent Wingfield's control. By the 1930s, when his banks collapsed, Wingfield was so bitterly resented that all attempts to reorganize and reopen them failed. In 1935, defeated and shorn of political power, Wingfield declared personal bankruptcy. Although a second fabulous gold mine brought him another fortune, he never recovered the political dominance he enjoyed at the height of his career in the 1920s. When Wingfield died in 1959, he had the satisfaction of witnessing the flourishing tourism-based economy he had worked so hard to promote.". First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. New/New.
