Der Bildband zeigt viele der künstlerischen Arbeiten, die seit Beginn der 80er Jahre zu beobachten waren. Dies war nicht zuletzt dem Umstand zu verda…nken, dass der ab 1975 neu errichtete, aus einzelnen Segmenten bestehende Typ Mauer - genannt Grenzmauer 75 - durch seine großzügigen glatten Betonflächen und seine zumeist weiße Grundierung als die größte Leinwand der Welt betrachtet wurde. Trotz Verbotes wurde das Bemalen der Mauer von zahlreichen Künstlern immer wieder auf der dem Westen zugewandten Seite fortgesetzt, unter ihnen bekannte Persönlichkeiten wie der New Yorker Künstler Keith Haring oder auch der Franzose Thierry Noir. Vom ehemaligen Westberlin erarbeitete Armin Lindauer eine umfangreiche, stets frontal aufgenommene Bildserie der interessantesten Teile der Mauer und verdichtet sie durch eine Aneinanderreihung zu einem innovativen Dokument der Zeitgeschichte. Durch den sukzessiven Abbau und die Zerstörung durch so genannte Mauerspechte, Souvenirjäger und professionelle Händler ist ein Großteil der Mauersubstanz und mit ihr die Kunst verloren gegangen oder in alle Teile der Welt verstreut. Ergänzt werden die Photographien durch einen einleitenden Text zur Geschichte der Mauer und Angaben zu den jeweiligen Künstlern und angrenzenden Gebäuden.
