Le Dyscolosa fait date dans l'histoire de la redécouverte de Ménandre. En effet, il s?agit pour nous non seulement de la seule pièce conservée dans sa totalité, mais encore de la seule qui puisse être datée avec quelque précision, en 317, sous l?archontat de Démogénès. La pièce est fondée sur le retardement, selon les principes de la comédie nouvelle, d?un dénouement prévisible et heureux. Sostrate, jeune et riche citoyen du dème de Phylé, aperçoit, lors d?une partie de chasse, une jolie paysanne. Le chasseur est rapidement pris au piège de l?amour. Si la jeune femme est aisément conquise, son père Cnémon, misanthrope notoire, est plus dur à séduire. Les bougonnements du barbon jaloux et atrabilaire, et les flagorneries timides et maladroites du jeune homme, sont les ressorts de l?intrigue, qui se termine, bien évidemment par l?union heureuse des deux jeunes gens.
