This book delves into the fascinating history of the East India Company's Civil Service, exploring the evolution of its recruitment and training practices. From its origins in the 16th century, when "Factors" were appointed by the Company's Adventurers, to the establishment of the Haileybury College in the early 19th century, the author traces the changing landscape of the Company's administration in India. The book examines the motivations behind the decision to establish Haileybury, including concerns about the suitability of young men for life in India and the desire for a more systematic and rigorous training program. The author analyzes the different stages of the selection process, the qualifications demanded of candidates, and the changing nature of the Civil Service over time. Through an examination of the historical documents and the personal reminiscences of individuals involved, the author provides a rich and insightful account of this unique institution. The book provides a valuable perspective on the evolution of colonial administration and the educational systems developed to prepare British civil servants for their roles in India. It offers a glimpse into the complex dynamics of power, patronage, and education that shaped the East India Company's empire. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of public health measures, particularly those related to sanitation, for the rural poor in the mid-19th century. The author, a medical doctor, argues that despite significant advances in urban sanitation and healthcare, the rural poor were largely neglected, leading to widespread suffering and poverty. The book examines the historical context of public health and welfare provision, highlighting the role of religious institutions and the aristocracy in providing limited support in the past. It also discusses the economic and social factors that contributed to the poor health of rural communities, including inadequate nutrition, lack of access to clean water, and poor housing conditions. The author proposes a comprehensive system of public health measures to address these issues, including the establishment of rural health districts, the provision of free medical care for the poor, and the promotion of public health education. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of public health, the plight of the rural poor, and the role of government in addressing health disparities This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Jules Gabriel Verne (1828 1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages extraordinaires, a series of bestselling adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872). His novels, always well documented, are generally set in the second half of the 19th century, taking into account the technological advances of the time. Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington were one of the most prolific publishers of Jules Verne in the English language. They were an "authorized" publisher, being given that title by J Hetzel et Cie. They published numerous editions and sets of Jules Verne books. Author's copyright/illustrated edition.
