London THE GRAFFIC 1882 broché une Vue lithographique en couleurs, Format : 26.7 x 10.25 inches ( 83 x 31 cm), supplément gratuit du Journal "THE GRAFFIC" du 2 Septembre 1882, Maclure & Macdonald Lithographers to the Queen London, en trés bon état Vue lithographique rare du canal de Suez, publiée en supplément du journal "Graphic" du 2 Septembre 1882. Comme indiqué ci-dessous, cette vue a probablement été réalisée à une époque où les Britanniques cherchaient activement à acquérir des participations financières dans la Compagnie du canal de Suez, occupant l'Égypte et réprimant la révolte d'Urabi. Bien que le canal ait été achevé en 1869, la première décennie d'exploitation fut tumultueuse. Les travaux commencèrent sur les rives du futur Port-Saïd en avril 1859. Le creusement dura dix ans. Certaines sources estiment que plus de 30 000 personnes travaillaient sur le canal à tout moment, que plus de 1,5 million de personnes de divers pays y étaient employées et que des dizaines de milliers d'ouvriers périrent, dont beaucoup du choléra et d'épidémies similaires. Le canal fut ouvert sous contrôle français en novembre 1869. Après son ouverture, la Compagnie du canal de Suez connut des difficultés financières. Les travaux restants ne furent achevés qu'en 1871, et le trafic fut inférieur aux prévisions durant les deux premières années. Le canal eut un impact immédiat et considérable sur le commerce mondial. Associé au chemin de fer transcontinental américain achevé six mois plus tôt, il permit de faire le tour du monde en un temps record . bel exemplaire . en trés bon état (very good condition).

Measures 16 1/2" x 21 7/8" Rare map of Africa extending from the mouth of the Congo River in present-day Angola, to Zanzibar on the eastern coast, and northward to the Nile River delta. In the left corner are two large portraits of General Gordon and Colonel Stewart, and an inset in the upper right corner shows views of Khartoum, Mudir's Palace, El Obeid, and the defile of Karaza Kordofan. This map was published as a supplement to the Illustrated London News, on July 12th, 1884. At the time of publication, the city of Khartoum was under siege by the Mahdists. Both General Gordon and Colonel Stewart were killed in the siege. In the lower margin, distance in miles between various cities is listed. Mountains, rivers, and cities are beautifully rendered. The region, covering present-day Angola, Congo, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt, is extensively labeled.
