While the number of articles remains almost the same, the work, is nearly twice as long owing to the inclusion of an up-to date account of chemistry and much new material." Though he worked just before the oxygen period he seems to have been conscious of the defects of the phlogistic hypothesis, and some of his work has a bearing upon the later development.
