Each entry in this dictionary introduces a notice, a simple summary of a biography and the characteristics of a work: the only concern here was to be quick and precise, but taking care, whenever possible, to provide a representative and signed quotation. The originality of the Dictionary of Illustrators lies elsewhere: it is in the presence, in each entry, of an illustration, chosen from hundreds as the most likely to capture the particular qualities of its author. Never before, in any book devoted to the whole of a visual art over a long period, has such an effort been made to provide what, precisely, can only be seen if it is made to be seen.
