Als ich Ihnen ankuendigte, ich wuerde Ihnen das Manuskript im Juni in Hamburg uebergeben, ahnte ich nicht, wie viel daran noch zu tun war. Sie werden sehen, dass ich Ihren Wuenschen von 1962 Rechnung getragen habe, was das Buch erheblich verbessert hat: die Notwendigkeit, di[e] kosmologischen Reden in extenso zu drucken, hat zu vielen Textverbesserungen gefuehrt, was wiederum auf das Verstaendnis einwirkte [.]". Die Turba Philosophorum", auch unter dem Namen Versammlung der Philosophen" bekannt, ist einer der ältesten lateinischen Texte der Alchemie. Martin Plessner war Assistent am Seminar für Geschichte und Kultur des Vorderen Orients in Hamburg, später in Berlin und Bonn, und habilitierte sich 1930 in Frankfurt a. M., wo er als Privatdozent bis zu seiner Emigration 1933 nach Palästina las. In den folgenden Jahren übte Plessner verschiedene Unterrichtstätigkeiten aus. 195069 gehörte er der Hebrew University an, seit 1955 als Associate Professor der arabischen Sprache und Literatur und seit 1963 als Professor der islamischen Kultur. Plessner, Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften (196673), beschäftigte sich vor allem mit dem Einfluß des klassischen Islam auf das mittelalterliche Judentum. Er veröffentlichte u. a. Die Geschichte der Wissenschaften im Islam als Aufgabe der modernen Islamwissenschaft' (1931) und Vorsokratische Philosophie und griechische Alchemie in arabisch-lateinischer Überlieferung' (1975)" (DBE).
