Hardcover. 0 (illustrator). Second edition (published a few months after the original first); 6 x 9; vol. I pp. 335, vol. II pp. 343; 1/2 cloth and marbled paper over boards; handwritten paper label to spine; some rubbing to tips of spine and edges of boards; small tipped-in bookplate to first blank page; stamp of "Russisches Archiv in Berlin" to title page; a few spots mainly to margins of first several pages, else clean; overall very good.A scarce copy of what is considered the height of Merezhkovskii's literary career. He was an author, poet, religious critic, co-founder of the Symbolist Movement, and husband of revered poet Zinaida Gippius. Right before returning home from exile in Paris in 1908, Merezhkovskii published his historical drama 'Pavel the First' which was promptly confiscated and banned by the Russian authorities. It would become the first in his "The Kingdom of the Beast" trilogy of which the current "Alexander the First" would be the second and "December the 14th" the third and last one. Throughout his life he would be nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature 9 times, winning none - each time for various reasons including his alleged support of Hitler and his connections to "terrorists" among others. 2.

St. Petersburg, B. O. Demakov, 1878. Large 8vo (25.3 x 16.2 cm). 183 pp.; three lithographed plates. Original printed wrappers. = An important but seldom seen work on microscopic life ((Ciliata and Flagellifera) by the Russian botanist and microbiologist Konstantin Sergeevich Mereschkowski (1855-1921). 'In 1898, he left his wife and young son in Crimea and emigrated to America, where he took the name "William Adler". He worked in California as a botanist at Los Angeles and Berkeley University, devising a new system of classification of the diatoms. Mereschkowski argued that the cell organelles, the nucleus and the chloroplast, are the descendants of bacteria that evolved into an intracellular symbiosis with amoebae. His ideas are strikingly reflected in the modern symbiogenesis theory developed and popularised by Lynn Margulis, and now widely accepted.' (Wikipedia). In Russian with Latin nomenclature. Rare. Provenance: a loosely inserted hand-written pencilled note to Mrs Kofoid by the American biologist Bertha Lousa Uhlemeyer (1887-1956) "I have another articcle in Russian - a little shorter than the first ." Uncut. Spine reinforced with a linen strip; a half-circular waterstain in the inner corners of the plates, otherwise a very good copy.
