Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. George Marston (illustrator). 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION USA 1832. Rebound in dark brown calf with gilt lettering and bands spine, raised bands spine forming 5 compartments, new brown EPs. Red seminary library stamp on title page. No other library marks on any pages. Clean covers, missing much of the gilt in the spine littering, sold binding, complete with short-ttile page and with four pages of publisher's ads at end. Title page is heavily embrowned and has a tideline. Subsequent 30 pages have increasingly faint tideline in upper outside corner. Pages 161 to 176 have heavy embrowning. Most other pages are bright but some have light scattered foxing (not heavy). The book measures 222mm tall x 150mm, and has 492 + [4] pages, b/w frontispiece. Condition: very good. 1st Edition 1st Issue. 4p.l.,xxvii,492pp. + 4pp. ads pp. Octavo. Bound in half polished calf and marbled boards. Rebacked at an early date. Corner moderately worn and bumped. Top and bottom of the text block moderately soiled. Half title. Frontispiece portrait of the author. The text is browned with some scattered light foxing, but less than normal. The paper is still flexible and crisp. Bookplate on the front pastedown. A very good copy. Rosove 232.A1; Spence 814. Account of an American sailor who went to sea in 1811, was first mate on the 'Wasp' in the Antarctic in 1821, and later in 1822-23 as her Captain, during which he made a controversial survey of East Antarctica waters, claiming to have reached 70 14 S in the Weddell Sea and reporting new land 'New South Greenland' (later disproved). He visited Islas Diego Ramirez, Tierra del Fuego, and the Falkland Islands, then Georgia; Bouvetoya, where he landed and took 172 Fur seal skins; Iles Kerguelen and the South Sandwich Islands. The bookplate is for Capt. W. Hext R.N. Lancarse. A very scarce item to find especially in this condition. The copy of Ann Shirley, noted polar historian.
