It is elegant illustration of Bente Torjusen's ultimate aim, which is to reveal the inspirational rhythms to which Munch worked. Bente Torjusen was in charge of public education at Oslo's Munch Museum, where she was also responsible for researching and planning exhibits. Her husband,Clifford West, artist and filmaker, designed the book. The book is signed by both Bente and Clifford. First printing. 9½" - 11¼". Signed by author. book.

Unknown edition. Signed in pencil lower right by Munch. A key early graphic pairing from Munch's Paris-period printmaking, in which the artist originally etched both subjects on one plate, which was later divided, though impressions were also pulled as a pair after the separation. The first subject is a psychologically charged nude study, the second an emblematic image of love as wound and sacrifice, with the woman presenting a bleeding heart. Together they encapsulate Munch's early exploration of erotic tension, vulnerability, and emotional violence within intimate relationships. The plates were executed in 1896; this impression is a later printing (with no printer's line), with the inkstamp on verso of Galerie Kahnweiler, 28 rue Vignon, Paris - the dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler's first gallery, opened at that address in May 1907. Kahnweiler was building a reputation as a discerning and forward-looking dealer, instrumental in shaping collectors' taste for avant-garde graphic work. Woll 54 and 55; Schiefler 47 and 48. Etching and drypoint, two subjects printed together on a single sheet, after the copperplate executed 1896, printed in a black/brown ink on handmade paper, all edges deckled.
