The Chronicles and Memorials of Great Britain and Ireland during the Middle Ages offers a meticulous record of English history from the Roman invasion to the reign of Henry VIII. Based on the examination of original manuscripts and edited under the direction of the Master of the Rolls, this expansive work encompasses diverse source materials meticulously collated from the best available manuscripts. It presents a comprehensive and authoritative account of the era, illuminating political, social, and cultural aspects of medieval England. The chronicles included in this volume, originally written by Adam Murimuth and Robert of Avesbury, provide unique insights into the reigns of Edward I, Edward II, and Edward III, capturing the essence of the period through the eyes of contemporary observers. Murimuth, a canon of St. Paul's, offers detailed accounts of ecclesiastical matters, papal provisions, and the exactions imposed by the pope, while Avesbury, registrar of the court of the archbishop of Canterbury, focuses on military history, particularly the campaigns of Edward III in France and Scotland. Together, these chronicles offer a rich tapestry of historical events, shedding light on the pivotal moments that shaped English history during the Middle Ages. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - These two Latin chronicles are principally concerned with the events of the mid-fourteenth century, and are particularly interesting for their accounts of the French campaigns of Edward III in the 1340s and 1350s. The chronicle of Adam Murimuth (c.1275-1347), which the writer designed to be a continuation of earlier works, begins in 1303 and extends to 1347. Although it is meagre at first, its latter parts are much fuller as Murimuth was able to draw on contemporary accounts. The chronicle of the deeds of Edward III by Robert of Avesbury (d.1359) is a military history of his reign up to the year 1356. It makes use of important documents that are not reproduced elsewhere. Published in 1889, this edition by Edward Maunde Thompson (1840-1929) includes an introduction providing historical background and relating what little is known of each chronicler. The Latin texts are accompanied by English side-notes.
