Add to basketUnbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. Fourth Edition. Nairn and her brotherâ'inâ'law Ogilvie are tried for the poisoning of her husband, a case that scandalised Scotland with its mixture of illicit passion, family betrayal and circumstantial evidence. The proceedings, spread over several days, became one of the most sensational Scottish criminal trials of the eighteenth century. 21 PAGES, printed in double columns. A genuine 1778 printing taken from the authoritative Complete Collection of State Trials. Originally compiled to serve both as a legal reference and a vehicle of political discourse, the State Trials series shaped contemporary and subsequent understanding of justice, authority, and dissent. The generously sized sheets on which these trials are printed offer particular pleasure to the eye and hand, bearing clear signs of their handmade origin: chain lines and wire impressions from the mould are readily visible, some pages display watermarks, and the paper varies subtly in thickness, all characteristic of 18th century rag paper. This particular trial report has been preserved in a modern card cover, prepared for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 30 x 47 cms. Category: State Trials; Printed before 1800; State Trials::Large Folio. This item may require more postage than the rates shown for delivery outside the UK. If extra postage is required we will contact you before processing your order and you will be given the details and option to decline the extra cost. Add to basket200pp, bound without final ad. leaf. Neat light brown buckram. Bookplate of the L.A. Law Library. Ownership signature on title of William Lawson of Cairnm(uir) ESTC N13789. Locked into a marriage to a man she detested, Katherine Nairn, 21, decided to kill her wealthy husband Thomas Ogilvie with a cup of tea laced with arsenic just four months after their wedding. He died in agony a few hours later on 6 June 1765. The ensuing trial at Edinburgh High Court revealed a scandalous love affair between Nairn and Ogilvie's younger brother Patrick, which under the law at that time amounted to incest. Both were convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Ogilvie was executed on 13th November but Nairn was spared until the following year because she was pregnant with her lover's child. A few days before she was due to be hanged she escaped in the guise of a prison officer and fled to Calais, never to be heard of again.
