Het leek wel of er een gezicht aan mijn arm hing. Voorzichtig probeerde ik overeind te komen, maar dat ging ook moeilijk. Pijn voelde ik niet. Het leek juist of mijn manier scherper was. Met onhandige roeibewegingen manoeuvreerde ik mij naar de rand van het bed en probeerde op te staan. Twee jaar geleden kreeg Max Pam een hersenbloeding. Hij overleefde en kwam er weer bovenop. In Het ravijn doet hij verslag van zijn herstel, dat begint op de dag dat hij ogenschijnlijk zonder aanleiding op de grond valt en in een rolstoel belandt. In dit boek beschrijft Max Pam hoe hij weer leerde lopen, veters strikken, fietsen en hoe hij opnieuw zijn rijbewijs moest halen. Maar naast het verslag van zijn fysieke herstel is Het ravijn ook een inventarisatie van de angsten die de mens bedreigen als er iets misgaat in het hoofd. 'Ik was niet bang voor de dood,' zegt de hoofdpersoon, 'ik was bang om te blijven leven - als wrak.' Het ravijn is een aangrijpend boek over iets wat iedereen zomaar overkomen kan.
