Il Toussaint, nato a Parigi nel 1715 morì a Berlino nel 1772. Seguì gli studi Giuridici per lasciarli poi per le Lettere. Collaborò all'Enciclopedia per la parte riguardante la giurisprudenza. Di sentimenti Giansenisti pubblicò nel 1748 "Costumi", la prima opera, secondo La Harpe: ".in cui uno scrittore si sia proposto un disegno di morale naturale libero da ogni credenza religiosa e da ogni culto esteriore". Il libro fu lasciato circolare liberamente fino a quando l'autore non pubblicò "Schiarimenti" che giustificavano alcuni punti della sua dottrina. Il libro e la sua dottrina furono condannati al fuoco. Risulta che l'opera ebbe traduzioni in lingua inglese e tedesca, ma non venne mai tradotta in Italia.
