Le volume est précédé d'une introduction qui expose au lecteur la situation politique, économique et religieuse de la province romano-byzantine de la Syrie au premiers siècles de l'ère chrétienne. Il a pour but d'aider le lecteur à comprendre l'importance du développement artistique et religieux que la Syrie et, plus particulièrement la région du Jébel el-A'la, objet principal de l'étude, a connu sous le régime romano-byzantin. Suit l'Inventaire proprement dit, avec l'énumeration des 52 sites anciens connus au Jébel el-A'la et dont la plupart n'avaient pas encore été explorés. Il décrit également les trésors artistico-religieux découverts au cours des visites des auteurs entre 1983 et 1986. Tous les sites du Jébel el-A'la ont été abordés dans l'Inventaire.
