Kl.-8°. 24 nn. Blatt, 446 (statt 462) S., 1 weißes Blatt; 278 S., 11 nn. Blatt.

VD16 ZV29675 & W1369. Ferguson I, p. 22 for Ruscelli (another edition). Duveen p. 612 and Ferguson II, p. 534 for Wecker (other editions). This German translation by Wecker of the very popular ?De secreti del r. d. Alessio Piemontese? (Book of Secrets) was first published in 1569, also by Perna, this is the fifth German edition. The Italian original was first published in 1555 (1556 according to Ferguson). It was translated into several languages, Latin, Spanish, French, English, Polish and published in over hundred editions, the last in 1790. It contains recipes for cosmetics, colours, dyes, medicines etc. The author, Girolamo Ruscelli (1518-66) from Viterbo, was a mathematician and cartographer working in Venice, publishing both works of his own and translations. He also wrote alchemical books but under the pseudonum of Alessio Piemontese (Alexius Pedemontanus in latin) and among them his most known work? De Secreti? Ferguson admits that the ?.receipts are for the most part medical and pharmaceutical and there is very little which bears direct on Alchemy or on Chemistry? Wecker?s work is bound between the two parts. The two are often bound together. The German translator Johann Jacob Wecker (1528-86) was a Swiss physician and philosopher, and like Ruscelli also an alchemist. He is also the author of the second work ?Ein nutzliches Büchlein? It was first published in 1570 also by Perna, and a later edition was published in 1616 (the only edition in Ferguson). He moved to Colmar in 1566 as town physician and he was married to Anna Wecker, who wrote a cook book. Hardcover / Hardback.

Add to basketFourth edition of the translation into Latin of the famous 'Secreti' of Alexius Pedemontanus (or Piemontese, ps. of Girolamo Ruscelli (1500-1565), as is generally assumed), by Johann Jakob Wecker. The first edition of this translation had appeared in Basel, published by Petrus Perna, in 1559, followed by two editions in 1560 (Basel and Antwerp); a fifth edition was also published in Lyon in 1565. Pedemontanu 'Secreti', first published in 1555, was an immensely popular book, printed in more than a hundred editions until the end of the 18th century. The Secreti was, apart from this Latin edition, translated into, German (1569; translator also J.J. Wecker, also published by Petrus Perna), English (1558), Spanish, French (1557) and Polish, and unleashed a torrent of 'Books of Secrets' that continued to be published down through the 18th century. The translator Johannes Jacob Wecker (1528-1586) was a Swiss physician and philosopher. He worked as a physician in Colmar from 1566 and wrote a number of works about medicine, some of which were in both French and Latin, the most well-known being his Antidotarum generale, a work about alchemy. His work is known for the elaborate bibliography on chemistry-alchemy. Doubtless fleeing accusations of sorcery, Wecker moved to Basel where he was appointed professor of logic.Owner's stamp (with initials A. D. C.?) in the lower margin of the title-page. The diving equipments depicted on plate 14 in the first part consist of an inflated bladder which is attached to a belt and an iron-head with a long snorkel and some air-pumps used for diving activities. The Italian physician, alchemist and cartographer, Alexis of Piedmont or Girolamo Ruscelli, was born in Viterbo, Italy around 1500 (perhaps earlier), and died in Venice, Italy around 1565. He is (probably) the author of the important "Secreti", published in 1555, and the "Secreti Nuovi", published in 1567, the first of which was extremely popular and of considerable influence, the second of which must be said to be of the greatest interest, but apparently not very widely read. He also translated the Geography of Ptolemy into Italian, and his books on war and fire-works are now quite scarce. Most of his works were popular in his life-time and the century to come, and they were translated into Latin, German, French and Welsh. At a very early point he indicated the plan of a scientific academy, and he must be said to be a very interesting 16th century scientist.
