Hard. Condition: Very Good Plus. No Jacket. 1st. First edition. Hard cover in original cloth. Published London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1949, first printing. 8vo., x+336pp., illustrated with maps. Green cloth with gilt spine titles. Minor, light dust foxing on edges, offset toning to fly leaves, else very good plus, clean, bright, attractive. Front flap of dust jacket laid in. "The fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942, was a great and unexpected blow both to Britain and to her Allies, a blow all the more unlooked-for because the defences of the island fortress had been generally believed to be impregnable. As a result, accusations against the military and civil leadership were immediately made, the greater part of them based on an almost total lack of detailed information. In this book, Lieutenant-General A. E. Percival, who was General Officer Commanding in Malaya from 1941 to 1942, has at last been able to present an authoritative account of the fighting in Malaya and of the events immediately leading up to it. He has given the reasons for the heart-breaking decisions he was forced to take and explained the hitherto unrevealed factors which influenced them. With access to such official records as have been recovered, and after a great deal of research, he has produced a record of the fighting which will go a long way to putting in correct perspective a campaign where British arms, although worn down by an enemy prepared for aggression and skilled in ruthlessness, acquitted itself with honour and ? as the case proved ? the most enduring courage. The War in Malaya, besides making an essential contribution to an understanding of the war in the Far East, is an outstanding study of human fortitude under adversity.".

GOOD, solid copy. [\] "[Leonard] was private secretary and assistant to the astronomer Percival Lowell for over two decades, from 1883 until Lowell's death. In 1895, she traveled to Africa with Lowell to look for a site for a new observatory, which was later established in Flagstaff, Arizona. Leonard managed Lowell's correspondence, edited his many articles and speeches, and traveled with him extensively. She was left in charge of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff during his absences. She carried out astronomical observations at the observatory in Arizona, after it was built in 1894, studying the planets Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and especially Mars. The observatory's logbooks show that "W.L.L." carried out observations frequently in the early years, and they include sketches that she made of Mars and Venus. This indicates that she was regularly using the large telescope a half century before it became usual for women in astronomy to do so. She also accompanied Lowell to Tacubaya, outside Mexico City, when the large Clark refractor was shipped there in 1896 for one of several oppositions of Mars that she would observe. In 1907, she published her drawings of Mars in Popular Astronomy with notes on the planet its ice caps, Lowell's 'canals' during some of the years when it was in opposition (1901, 1903, 1905). In 1904, Leonard was inducted into the Societé Astronomique de France, then an unusual honor for a woman. She was also an honorary member of the Sociedad Astronomico de Mexico."--Wikipedia |\| And bound in the same issue with: LOWELL, Percival. "North Polar Cap of Mars", pp 416-421. Hardcover. Condition: Good. W. H. Pickering and A. E. Douglass (illustrator). First Edition. Remarkable and rare First Edition published 1895 illustrated with 24 plates some from the original drawings and sketches of W. H. Pickering and A. E. Douglass. Red cloth hardcover boards with gilt design on the front cover; gilt lettering and gilt page edges. The Author's first and important treatise on the early explorations of Mars. Boards with moderate wear and heavy soiling; spine edges frayed; hinges cracked and pages dusty. Percival Lawrence Lowell (1855-1916) was a businessman, author, mathematician, and astronomer who fueled speculation that there were canals on Mars, founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, and formed the beginning of the effort that led to the discovery of Pluto 14 years after his death. He was particularly interested in the canals of Mars, as drawn by Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, who was director of the Milan Observatory. In 1894 Lowell chose Flagstaff, Arizona Territory as the home of his new observatory. For the next fifteen years he studied Mars extensively, and made intricate drawings of the surface markings as he perceived them. Lowell published his views in three books: Mars (1895), Mars and Its Canals (1906), and Mars As the Abode of Life (1908). With these writings, Lowell more than anyone else popularized the long-held belief that these markings showed that Mars sustained intelligent life forms. His works include a detailed description of what he termed the 'non-natural features' of the planet's surface, including especially a full account of the 'canals,' single and double; the 'oases,' as he termed the dark spots at their intersections; and the varying visibility of both, depending partly on the Martian seasons. He theorized that an advanced but desperate culture had built the canals to tap Mars' polar ice caps, the last source of water on an inexorably drying planet. While this idea excited the public, the astronomical community was skeptical. Many astronomers could not see these markings, and few believed that they were as extensive as Lowell claimed.
