New ISBN: 9786057120533 CATALOG: Byzance KEYWORDS: Byzantium Istanbul - Constantinople At a time when classical antiquity continued to be the main attraction, drawing Western scholars to the Eastern Mediterranean, Byzantine history and archaeology emerged as a new field of competitive scientific exploration in the former Byzantine capital. Some of the major themes and issues addressed at Discovering Byzantium in Istanbul are scholars' motivations and incentives for studying the Byzantine Empire, the means by which they accessed the monuments and material wealth of Constantinople, what they were allowed to see and under what circumstances and conditions, and the networks they established among themselves and with authorities from governmental and cultural institutions. The activities of newly founded foreign institutes and museums are also examined, along with scientific competition at the international level, including the reactions of Turkish scholars. The period covered by Discovering Byzantium in Istanbul begins with the emergence of major archaeological expeditions in the Eastern Mediterranean and is rich in major historical events and findings that brought the Ottoman Empire and the modern Turkish Republic to the fore. It ends with the International Congress of Byzantine Studies convening its tenth conference, for the first time meeting in Istanbul.

In between lies the unconventional story of a structure shaped by the footprints of these remarkable men. The former church of the monastery of Christ of the Chora, better known today as the Kariye Camisi or Kariye Museum, is one of the most impressive Byzantine monuments to survive in the modern city of ?stanbul. Founded probably as early as the sixth century, rebuilt by members of the imperial family in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, and splendidly restored by the Byzantine humanist, poet, and prime minister Theodore Metochites between 1316 and 1321, the church of the Chora Monastery is today considered one of the most outstanding examples of Late Byzantine art and architecture to survive. While the building itself was already known as the 'Mosaic Mosque' during the nineteenth century, the fame of the church's rich and complex interior decoration rests by and large on an extensive restoration campaign initiated by the American scholar and philanthropist Thomas Whittemore, founder and director of the Byzantine Institute of America from 1930 to his death in 1950. It was the aim of this exhibition, to explore the history of the "Kariye" through its representation over the centuries, and to pay homage to the two men who were responsible for its restoration and conservation in the fourteenth and twentieth centuries respectively: Theodore Metochites and Thomas Whittemore. The exhibition furthermore aimed to celebrate the work of those who have helped to preserve the architecture of the Kariye and its extraordinary cycle of mosaics and frescoes during the 1940s and 1950s.

An exhibition catalogue. The Sevi Gonul Collection of ecclesiastical silver, which is now housed in the Sadberk Hanim Museum, Istanbul, comprises sixty-five objects manufactured in Istanbul over a two-hundred year period, from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century. The majority of the objects in the Collection is intended for liturgical use, but there is also a small, distinctive group decorated with with secular themes inspired from Antique mythology. Whether liturgical or secular, the iconographic composition of these objects emerges from a rich ornamental context of floral, vegetal and animal motifs drawn from contemporary artistic trends in western Europe. This particular assembly offers fascinating evidence for the diverse artistic and cultural milieu of Istanbul in the late Ottoman period.

Images from the fifteenth and early sixteenth century show the structure of the Hippodrome to have been fairly well preserved at the time of the Ottoman conquest. The construction of Ottoman palaces and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, however, played a major role in the dismantling of the remains of the Hippodrome. Nevertheless, this large open space's association with horses was preserved. It became known as Atmeydani (Horse Square) during the Ottoman era and was used for playing the equestrian game cirit. The Ottomans and the sultans also continued to hold celebrations and public spectacles in the area. Visitors to the Hippodrome today can view its three surviving monuments-the masonry obelisk, the Serpent Column, and the Egyptian obelisk-but few can easily imagine the splendor and size of the original Hippodrome that stood for more than eleven centuries."The Hippodrome/ Atmeydani: Istanbul's Stage of History" exhibition almost rebuilds the magnificent Hippodrome decorated with exceptionally beautiful monuments and the Atmeydani of the Ottoman period, and examines the life surrounding them.

The famous aphorism of Hippocrates-'life is short, art long'-stands at the heart of this exhibition, which examines the art and practice of healing in Byzantium from Roman times to the late Byzantine period. It traces the concurrent methods of healing-faith, magic, and rational medicine-from the foundations laid by Apollo and Asklepios, healers of antiquity, as well as Hippocrates and Dioscorides, the founders of rational medicine. The fascinating coexistence of a belief in demons as the primary cause of illness and a rational perception of disease, grounded in Hippocratic teachings, come together in the protagonists of the "art of healing"-the physicians, druggists, saints, holy men, and magicians who healed the sick. The daily rituals involved in maintaining and pursuing well-being, protecting against demons, purifying the body and soul offer a glimpse into the daily life of the Byzantines. The exhibition catalogue illustrates the influence of Byzantium's ancient cultural heritage on religious and rational thought as well as contemporary scientific developments and innovations from around the Mediterranean. The Hippodrome was the largest and one of the most significant buildings in Byzantine Constantinople. Located in the heart of the city beside the Great Palace, it was not only an arena for chariot races -the most exciting and popular spectator sport from the 4th to the 7th century- but also a place where emperors were created, military victories celebrated, and rulers collectively acclaimed by the people.Atmeydan , on the other hand, became one of the most important and lively public spaces of Ottoman stanbul. The Hippodrome/ Atmeydan : stanbul's Stage of History exhibition examined this very special and colorful square of the city, which has also hosted a variety of consequential incidents during the foundation of the Republic, through artefacts, architectural drawings, photographs and daily life objects, and took the stanbulites on a tour of their city's different recollection spanning from the 4th to the 20th century. An amazing and impressive publication that brings the Hippodrome (and Istanbul in general) to life through archival bw photographs, vivid color plates, extensive text and annotations. If you're a fan of Ottoman history, you need this catalogue!!! Pera Museum Publication No. 39. VG- contents; covers lightly wrinkled and with some rubbing.
