A whimsical 19th century poem on the art of printing, first published in 1875 by Love & Duncan at Airdrie, when the author was 'but a few years out of his apprenticeship'.

A collection of 9 samples of Indian papers, 8 are bifoliums and one (a Nepalese paper) is tipped onto a leaf with supported letterpress. The examples were bought by the compiler from a paper merchant who provided them as a sample of the work of small scale unites located in forest areas using simple machinery. The papers originate from a wide are of the country from Tamil Nadu in the south to Assam on the border with Tibet, together with the Nepalese sample noted above which. although in close proximity to India, shows paper made by a quite different method. The selection of papers comprising this specimen were bought from a paper merchant who provided them as a sample of the work of small scale units located in forest areas using simple machinery. They originate over a wide area of the country from Tamil Nadu in the South to Assam on the border with Tibet: (introduction). 9" x 5 3/4". Introduction"Marbling was a trade secret until the mid-19th century. Much has been written about it since, but nothing has appeared about the Leicestershire marbling industry, based on the old town of Loughborough. Some quite unusual patters were devised amongst the Loughborough master marblers. A selection of these follows, with their traditional names." Small 4to., 27x19cm, [98pp.] Full black goatskin, spine lettered in gilt; although not called for in the text, this is presumably the original binding of the 10 special copies. Loughborough, The Plough Press Fine.  An important survey of English marbled paper, with an essay by Wakeman accompanied by 34 original samples, including work by Richard J. Wolfe, Michael Mitchell, Douglas Cockerell and a number of historic examples. A title which is already scarce in commerce, the special edition with 7 additional samples is exceptionally so. .
