Claude Jacquet de Pontarlier (1624 - 1720) s'était tellement pris de passion pour le pèlerinage d'Einsiedeln qu'il y installa lui-même sa demeure et que, pendant 26 ans, il fit tout son possible pour répandre la dévotion à ce sanctuaire parmi ses compatriotes, comme en témoignent encore aujourd'hui les nombreux pèlerins francs-comtois. Dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, on entreprit d'abord de faire paraître une édition française (de la Chronique de l'Ermitage). Ce travail fut facilité par le fait qu'un chanoine de la cathédrale de Besançon, le Dr Claudius Jacquet [sic] de Pontarlier, séjournait alors à Einsiedeln. Celui-ci était un très grand admirateur du lieu de grâce et s'est occupé de la traduction à la suite des chroniques allemandes et de l'édition latine des récits de miracles de 1665. La Vierge noire d'Einsiedeln peut être considérée comme une vierge combative au service de la Contre-Réforme catholique. Sa diffusion, à la fin du XVIIème siècle, en Comté a pour rôle de renforcer les défenses du catholicisme le long d'une frontière religieuse sensible.
