Er lebte 1913-1915 in Berlin, wo es ihm gelang, eine eigenständige malerische Ausdrucksweise zu entwickeln, die sich auf der Höhe der damaligen Avantgardekunst befand. Seine Bilder dieser Zeit explodieren regelrecht in leuchtenden Farben, die kontrastreich nebeneinander gesetzt sind. Thematisch steht der Erste Weltkrieg im Zentrum. Flaggen, Standarten und militärische Insignien wie das Eiserne Kreuz tauchen immer wieder als Motive auf.
