The very scarce first English language edition of this work. Illustrated with an engraved portrait front…ispiece, and thirty-one engraved plates, including four folding plates. These engravings are based upon drawings by the Classical painter Nicholas Poussin. Collated, lacking four plates. Leonardo Da Vinci's 'Treatise on Painting', originally compiled at the height of the Renaissance in 1480 but not published until 1651, in France. Da Vinci offers an examination of painting as a science with a focus on anatomy. Da Vinci's theories on anatomical drawing is presented alongside folding tables depicting perspective angles. A-O8. Collated, complete. ESTC T174885 Lacking the front free endpaper. With three pages of advertisements to the rear. The translation is sometimes attributed to John Senex. In a full calf binding, with gilt detailing to back strip. Lacking spine label. Significant rubbing to board perimeters, joints, back strip head and tail and raised bands. Joints starting, with front board somewhat tenderly held by cords only, and rear board firmly held. Inscription to front pastedown. Lacking front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
