Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. SIGNED on the title page in rather faded blue ink. The pen and ink used has a feathered look because the publisher used a cheap paper. First U.K. edition, from the American sheets. His first novel, and very scarce as a signed copy. There is a lean to the spine and the cloth boards are a bit stained - see photos. Nevertheless, this is a desirable collectable because of the signature, which typically sprawls across the title page. Signed by Author.

The binding is secure, with quarter bound leather of great quality. The text block is untrimmed on the leading edge. The book is with a clear plastic jacket and the original prospectus issued by the publisher is loose laid. This is an exceptionally fine copy. Signed by Author.

Original publisher's glassine d/w is perfect; this is unusual because most copies seem to have torn covers. This is signed by Powys and numbered 122 of only 560 copies printed. With original publisher's flyer inserted as well as a publisher's compliment slip. Priestley was a great enthusiast of JCP's work.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Limited Edition. A gorgeous and very rare edition, sumptuously bound in leather and cloth, printed on special paper with sewn signatures, numbered and signed. This is number 82 of only 200 copies offered for sale in 1951, and with a grand looking broody photograph of the author as the frontispiece. This great messy novel was cut by about a third at the editors behest, so although this cannot ever be regarded as the true author text it is nonetheless an important Powys collectable. The binding and care that has been taken ensures this will last for centuries. This copy has been used a bit, the marbled endpapers are very slightly grubby, and there are some minor wrinkles to a few text pages. But this curiosity survives all complaint for the true Powysian; it is somehow reflective of the author that it ever achieved publication in this form at all. It is a true first edition, and with the brilliantly emphatic signature sprawling across the limitation page, in bluest Quink ink, this bleeding chunk of a masterpiece has a very special allure. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. VERY RARE SIGNED first edition of the Bodley Head 1933 hardback. A typical vigorous blue ink scrawled signature, in full, 'John Cowper Powys', right across the title page at an angle. This looks as if it has been written in some kind of blue fountain pen, because it is still fresh looking although slightly faded. The book is still fairly tightly bound, and although it is obviously a book that has been read it has obviously been treated with respect. It is printed on a thin onion skin type of paper, which is necessary with such an extensive text; the spine is sunned. It has a previous owner's blind stamp to the half title, but this is rather attractive so it does not seem like a fault. The cloth binding is not damaged. The jacket is worn, and the spine of it has a section missing at the top, but fortunately there is no loss to any type or live matter, just a missing area of white jacket. But, just to emphasise, this is rare as a signed first edition and even more rare with the jacket, which is now protected inside a mylar sleeve. The great Simon & Schuster limited edition is the most desirable for the collector, but this Bodley Head edition is even rarer as a signed first.
