Sometimes referred to as Pseudo-Longinus because his real name is unknown, Longinus was a Greek teacher of rhetoric or a literary critic who may have lived in the 1st or 3rd century AD. Longinus is known only for this one work, which is both a treatise on aesthetics and a work of literary criticism. It is written in an epistolary form and the final part, possibly dealing with public speaking, has been lost. On the Sublime is a compendium of literary exemplars, with about 50 authors spanning 1,000 years mentioned or quoted. Along with the expected examples from Homer and other figures of Greek culture, Longinus refers to a passage from Genesis, which is quite unusual for the 1st century. The Italian translator, Antonio Francesco Gori (1691-1757) was a Florentine antiquarian, a priest in minor orders, provost of the Baptistery of San Giovanni from 1746 and a professor at the Liceo, whose numerous publications of ancient Roman sculpture and antiquities formed part of the repertory on which eighteenth century scholarship as well as the artistic movement of neoclassicism were based.

["Notwithstanding his many avocations, Longinus composed a great number of works, which appear to have been held in the highest estimation, all of which have perished. It was once thought that the extant rhetorical treatise 'On the Sublime' was written by him, but it is now thought to have been written by an unknown 1st century writer" (Wikipedia)]. Cassius Longinus (Greek: c. 213 273 AD), also known as Dionysius Cassius Longinus or Pseudo-Longinus, was a Greek rhetorician and philosophical critic. Born in either Emesa or Athens, he studied at Alexandria under Ammonius Saccas and Origen the Pagan, and taught for thirty years in Athens, one of his pupils being Porphyry. Longinus did not embrace the Neoplatonism then being developed by Plotinus, but continued as a Platonist of the old type and his reputation as a literary critic was immense. During a visit to the east, he became a teacher, and subsequently chief counsellor to Zenobia, queen of Palmyra. It was by his advice that she endeavoured to regain her independence from Rome. Emperor Aurelian, however, crushed the revolt, and Longinus was executed. The origin of his gentile name Cassius is unknown; it can only be conjectured that he was the client to some Cassius Longinus, or that his ancestors had received the Roman franchise through the influence of some Cassius Longinus. He was born about 213, and was killed in 273, at the age of sixty. The suggestion that his original name was Dionysius arose only because the 1st century rhetorical treatise On the Sublime was ascribed to a "Dionysius or Longinus" in the medieval period. His native place is uncertain; some say that Longinus was a born in Emesa, while others say he was born in Athens. The Suda states that Fronto of Emesa, the uncle of Longinus, taught rhetoric at Athens, and on his death in Athens left behind him Longinus, the son of his sister Frontonis. It would seem that Fronto took special care of the education of his nephew, and on his death-bed he made him his heir. In the preface to his work On Ends, which is preserved in Porphyry's Life of Plotinus, Longinus himself relates that from his early age he made many journeys with his parents, that he visited many countries and became acquainted with all those who at the time enjoyed a great reputation as philosophers, among whom the most illustrious were Ammonius Saccas, Origen the Pagan, Plotinus, and Amelius. Of the first two Longinus was a pupil for a long time, but Longinus did not embrace the Neoplatonism then being developed by Ammonius and Plotinus, rather he continued as a Platonist of the old type. Longinus in his study of philosophy made himself thoroughly familiar with Plato's works; and that he himself was a genuine Platonist is evident from the fragments still extant, as well as from the commentaries he wrote on several of Plato's dialogues. The few fragments of his commentaries which have come down to us show that he was free from the allegorical notions by which his contemporaries claimed to have discovered the wisdom of the ancients. His commentaries not only explained the subject-matter discussed by Plato, but also his style and diction. In opposition to Plotinus, Longinus upheld the doctrine that the Platonic ideas existed outside the divine Nous. Plotinus, after reading his treatise On First Principles, remarked that Longinus might be a scholar, but that he was no philosopher. After Longinus had learnt all he could from Ammonius at Alexandria and the other philosophers whom he met in his travels, he returned to Athens. He there devoted himself with so much zeal to the instruction of his many pupils that he scarcely had any time left for writing. The most distinguished of his pupils was Porphyry. At Athens, Longinus seems to have lectured on philosophy and criticism, as well as on rhetoric and grammar, and the extent of his knowledge was so great, that Eunapius calls him "a living library" and "a walking museum;". The power for which Longinus was most celebrated was his critical skill, which was indeed so great that the expression "to judge like Longinus" became synonymous with "to judge correctly". After having spent much of his life at Athens composing the best of his works, he went to the East, either to see his friends at Emesa or to settle some family affairs. It seems to have been on that occasion that he became known to queen Zenobia of Palmyra, who, being a woman of great talent, and fond of the arts and literature, made him her teacher of Greek literature. As Longinus had no extensive library at his command at Palmyra, he was obliged almost entirely to abandon his literary pursuits. He soon discovered another use for his talents, for when king Odaenathus died Queen Zenobia undertook the government of the empire. She availed herself of the advice of Longinus; it was he who advised and encouraged her to shake off Roman rule and become an independent sovereign. As a result, Zenobia wrote a spirited letter to the Roman emperor Aurelian. In 273, when Aurelian took and destroyed Palmyra, Longinus had to pay with his life for the advice which he had given to Zenobia. Longinus must have been especially pained by this catastrophe, as the queen asserted her own innocence after having fallen into the hands of the Romans, and threw all the blame upon her advisers, particularly Longinus. He bore his execution with a firmness and cheerfulness worthy of Socrates. In his private life Longinus seems to have been amiable; for although his pupil Porphyry left him, declaring that he would seek a better philosophy in the scho.

Add to basket4to, pp.[viii], 26, 254, [6]; some scattered spots, but a very good, wide-margined copy; bound in early nineteenth-century straight-grained green morocco, borders roll-tooled in gilt, central gilt monogram CY (Charles Yonge, seebelow) surmounted by a stag's head crest, spine gilt in compartments on slightly later onlaid morocco (chipped to reveal a similarly gilt spine beneath), edges gilt, marbled endpapers; a few scuffs, corners a little bumped. The first Toup edition of Longinus' On the Sublime, finely printed and handsomely bound as a leaving present given by the Eton master Charles Yonge. This philosophical treatise, ?e?? ????? (literally 'About elevation'), was probably composed in the first century, and while attributed here to a Dionysius Longinus, it is now considered an anonymous work. The author seeks to establish 'certain distinctions of conception and expression, with the sources and effects of achieving a state of elevation that he calls ekstasis (transport, in the quite literal sense: a state of being "carried outside" oneself). This sublimity is a quality not easily stabilized, since Longinus variously associates it with the inspired author, the "excited" text itself, and the impact transmitted to the audience. What is clear throughout the work, however, is that the consequences of hupsos are irresistible and lend themselves to a rhetoric of astonishment [ekplexis] and domination' (Macksey, 'Longinus reconsidered' in Modern Language Notes 108 (1993), p.913). The idea of the sublime was central to eighteenth-century English aesthetics, from Alexander Pope to Edmund Burke. The text for this edition was prepared by the Cornish clergyman Jonathan Toup (17131785) and David Ruhnken (17231798). Toup worked on the text for thirty-five years, and he invited Ruhnken, professor of Greek at the University of Leiden, to provide the notes. An octavo edition was also printed in the same year (ESTC T87459). Provenance:Charles Yonge (17811830) was a master at Eton, and, in accordance with tradition, used this stamp on books he gave out as leaving presents to his students. His son, Charles Duke Yonge (18121891), was a classical scholar who published translations of Greek and Latin works into English; these bindings are sometimes attributed to him. At least two other copies of Longinus in Greek had Yonge's monogram stamp, one the 1724 London printing, and another the 1793 Bodoni edition. British Armorial Bindings records editions of Virgil and Juvenal with this stamp. ESTC T87460. Language: Greek.

216 x 136 mm. (8 1/2 x 5 3/8"). viii, [9]-223, [1] pp.Translated from the Greek by William Smith. Attractive contemporary oxblood calf decorated in gilt and blind, covers with a wide gilt palmette frame enclosing an intricately blind-stamped panel with additional gilt decoration, raised bands, spine heavily gilt in compartments, black morocco label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers and edges. Front free endpaper inscribed in ink: "Miss Filliter obtained this Book, as a Prize by her uniform attention to the Study of Latin, during the Half-year. / June, 1828." Lower corners lightly bumped, a little rubbing at extremities, flyleaves faintly browned, occasional trivial internal imperfections, but still quite a fine copy, the contents extremely clean and unusually bright, and in a well-preserved binding with a great deal of aesthetic appeal. In a handsomely decorated binding, this is an excellent translation of one of the most important treatises of literary criticism to come out of the ancient world. First published in 1737, our translation established the reputation of William Smith (1711-87) as a "talented classical scholar." (DNB) A later William Smith (the lexicographer) said of "On the Sublime," "there is scarcely any work in the range of ancient literature which, independent of its excellence of style, contains so many exquisite remarks upon oratory, poetry, and good taste in general." Although generally attributed to the third century Greek philosopher and critic Longinus, the work probably preceded him. After unsuccessful attempts to determine if Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Cassius Longinus, Plutarch, or another was the author, scholars arrived at the solution of calling the creator "Pseudo-Longinus." Our pretty, though unsigned, binding combines gilt and blind decoration in a particularly pleasant way. Volumes of classics in ornamental bindings were popular school prizes in the 19th century, but ours is distinguished by being presented to a young lady who excelled in Latin at a time when most women received little formal education, and 40 percent of the women in England were illiterate. The condition here suggests Miss Filliter (and her successors) treasured and cared for the present volume.
