Offered is a first edition, first printing of "The True Christian Communion" (Tract No. 154) published in 1886 by The Tract Association of Friends out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A leaflet measuring 4-5/8" by 7-3/4" and containing eight pages including front and rear covers. Published… out of No. 304 Arch Street, the tract begins: "The communion of the body and blood of Christ is a mystery hid from men in the first or fallen and degenerate state, which they cannot understand nor comprehend, as they there abide, neither can they be participators of it, nor yet are they able to discern the Lord's body. Hence the outward supper was not instituted as an ordinance by our Lord, who was and is himself the bread and water of life." Condition: it appears that a rectangular object once rested on the tract, and the front cover shows light narrow age-marks from its perimeter; otherwise and overall the tract is in excellent condition.

Offered is a fourth edition of "A Short Account of George Fox Prepared for Young Children, And a Collection of Verses" (Juvenile Series No. 4) published in 1909 by The Tract Association of Friends. A left-stapled booklet measuring 3-3/8" by 4-7/8" and containing 36 pages including front…and rear covers. The first page provides a history of this title: "This short compilation was prepared solely for the use of the Infant School connected with Friends' Select School, Philadelphia, without any view to its publication. It was found interesting to the pupils and printed - the first edition in 1833, the second in 1842, and the third in 1855. In 1909 it was adopted by the Tract Association of Friends for the Juvenile series in the hope that it may prove helpful in leading the youthful mind to an acquaintance with our Christian testimonies." In question and answer format, questions include: Who was the first of the Friends, commonly called Quakers?; Was he very careful always to speak the truth?; Did people pay him for preaching to him?; What things did George Fox speak against?; Did George Fox ever come to America?; Give a description of George Fox; numerous others. The last fourteen pages contain several poems, including "Lines: Addressed to the Martyrs" and "Love Each Other." In splendid condition for its age.

"Kring's case is one of those legal marathons peculiar to the United States. Infatuated with but rejected by Mrs. Broemser, he shot her on January 4, 1875. The death sentence in trial number 1 was reversed. Trials number 2 and 3 were mistrials. At trial number 4 Kring pled guilty to second-degree murder, but, after receiving a twenty-five-year sentence, he got that reversed. At trial number 5 he received his second death sentence, which the United States Supreme Court reversed in October, 1882, by a five-to-four vote" (McDade). This copy probably belonged to the T.J. Chipman's landmark work occupies a pivotal place in American jurisprudence, capturing a moment of profound transformation in economic and legal thought. In his 1847 Legal Bibliography, J.G. Marvin famously criticized Chipman, asserting that the author "show[ed] what the law of contracts ought to be rather than what the law of contracts is." However, modern legal historians view Marvin's critique as a failure to grasp a rapidly evolving legal landscape, demonstrating instead that Chipman's ideas were profoundly ahead of their time. As legal historian Morton Horwitz points out, Chipman was the first American jurist to dismantle the traditional, paternalistic "equity theory of contract"-which focused on the inherent fairness of an exchange-and submerge it in a modern "conception of contractual obligation based exclusively on express bargains" determined strictly by market values. Daniel Chipman was a distinguished Vermont attorney, a professor of law at Middlebury College, and a vital political figure in the state's formative years. Chipman's landmark work occupies a pivotal place in American jurisprudence, capturing a moment of profound transformation in economic and legal thought. In his 1847 Legal Bibliography, J.G. Marvin famously criticized Chipman, asserting that the author "show[ed] what the law of contracts ought to be rather than what the law of contracts is." However, modern legal historians view Marvin's critique as a failure to grasp a rapidly evolving legal landscape, demonstrating instead that Chipman's ideas were profoundly ahead of their time. As legal historian Morton Horwitz points out, Chipman was the first American jurist to dismantle the traditional, paternalistic "equity theory of contract"-which focused on the inherent fairness of an exchange-and submerge it in a modern "conception of contractual obligation based exclusively on express bargains" determined strictly by market values. Consequently, this essay remains an indispensable primary source for understanding the development of early American commercial law and the unique marketplace practices of the young republic. Daniel Chipman was a distinguished Vermont attorney, a professor of law at Middlebury College, and a vital political figure in the state's formative years. Frontis (portrait) present. 18th century signature at top right of title page. Page 97 has very thin band of slight discoloration along the top edge. Pages 266/267 crinkled at lower corner. Pages 739/740 lower corner creased. Two small stains at top margin of 741. Two clear tape repairs to verso of final blank near hinge. Very rare foxing. No internal markings aside from signature on title page. Clean, bright, and tight throughout. Leaves very crisp, margins exceptionally well retained, and corners of leaves are still crisp and right angles--a very fresh and seemingly unread copy. Text in English, except 706 - 719 (No 54, De Cuticula Humana), which is in Latin. Seven (7) folding plates, each with variable transfer onto preceding versos. Folds are all intact and most margins are entirely retained, though fore edge margin of plate five (5) is a bit ragged, but does not encroach upon the image. 2 blanks, frontis, title, advertisement, v - viii contents, ix - xxiv life of the author, 1 - 780 text and plates, 781 - 791 index, directions to binder, two blanks. Plate i follows page 266; plate ii follows 468; iii follows 532; iv follows 590, v - 594, vi - 620, and vii - 676.
