Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book discusses the concept of the eternal existence of matter, and how this relates to the notion of a supreme being, or God. The author disputes the idea that something can be created from nothing, and argues that matter has always existed, and that the universe is constantly in…a state of becoming and change. The author also challenges the notion that God is a static, unchanging being, and argues that God is constantly evolving and interacting with the universe. The book draws on a range of philosophical and scientific ideas to support its arguments, and offers a fresh perspective on the nature of reality and the relationship between God and the universe. Overall, this book offers a thought-provoking and challenging exploration of the nature of existence, and will appeal to readers interested in philosophy, religion, and science. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

The wisdom & mildness of his administration shed a lustre on our republican Inst…itutions, which will ultimately penetrate the dark & dreary abodes of despotism & ameliorate the condition of man"; No. 6 in full: To "General Lafayette [at the time on his 1824 tour of the country, but not in Belfast], the adopted son of the father of our country. The grateful, affectionate & spontaneous acclimations of ten millions of free people, with one accord, welcome his return to the land of liberty; & proclaim him the rightful heir of the sublime virtuous & immortal fame of the illustrious Washington, -- the highest honour & richest in heritance, ever conferred on man." The other toasts were to "the farmer's jubilee," "the divine art of tilling the soil," "commerce & manufacturers," "Albion K. Parris [Gov. of Maine]," "our moral, religious, literary & scientific Institutions," "national improvements," "the useful & mechanic arts," "the Gardner Lyceum," "the juice of the apple," "the American farmer," and "the American fair." All of the toasts boast Read's way with words. Nathan Read (1759-1849) served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts, 1800-1803; he moved to Maine in 1807 and was involved in civic affairs there until his death. Contact seller5-star sellerSmall 4to (22 cm). Bifolio of four pages, approximately 550 words, in part: [Responding to a recent letter from the Ex-President:] "With a view to ascertain by experiment the use of a machine most notable for different horse power, I am now constructing one at Salem, designed, nearly as I could calculate from theory, for two hor…se power, which I expect will be completed in about a fortnight I am at this time uninformed of the extent & population of the counties you mention; but as it would be advantageous & highly gratifying to me to have the machine introduced into Virg. under your auspices, I assure you I shall be very moderate in my terms for the right of using it in the counties named I ought to know the power you wish to apply that the use of the machine may be adapted to it." The balance of the letter describes in detail technical aspects of the machine and its parts, concluding with a discussion of shipping one to Virginia rather than having it constructed there. Old fold lines, but very good. Read began a side-career as an inventor in the 1780s that continued well into the 19th century, along the way working on improvements in steam engines, creating a rotary steam engine and a chainwheel for paddle wheels, building a machine that made one-step finished nails, and providing many new machines and improvements for agricultural work, especially windmill, waterpower, and threshing technology. We have not found records of a Madison-Read correspondence.
