This book delves into the challenges and triumphs of early botanists as they explored the rugged landscapes and diverse flora of Kerry. The author meticulously traces the evolution of botanical exploration in the region, from the pioneering efforts of figures like Edward Lhwyd in the late 17th century to the comprehensive surveys of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The narrative highlights the contributions of key individuals and scientific societies, showcasing their dedication to documenting and understanding the rich plant life of Kerry. This book goes beyond a mere catalog of plant species, offering insights into the intricate interplay between the region's physical features, geological formations, and climatic conditions, and how these factors have shaped the distribution and characteristics of its flora. The thematic depth extends to discussions on the cultural and historical significance of certain plants, painting a vivid picture of Kerry's botanical heritage. Ultimately, this book illuminates the profound impact of human curiosity and scientific inquiry on our understanding of the natural world, leaving readers with a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance and interconnectedness of ecosystems. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Add to basketSole edition. 8vo. lxxxii, 406 pp. Publisher's dark green cloth, gilt lettered to the spine, recent bookplate to the front free endpaper, with loosely inserted an autograph letter signed from the author on headed paper, dated February 1906. 6 plates plus a colour folding map. Wear to the covers which also show some discolouration, hinges slack but holding. The letter is a response to a friend called Marshall who evidently resided in India. Scully expresses his longing to visit the sub-continent but, given the limited possibility of him undertaking such a trip, he welcomes "a letter from one actually there" as "doubly interesting". He moves on to other matters regarding mutual acquaintances but also gives a brief account of a month long trip to Kerry, some days of which he had hoped to explore the Dingle promontory and the "fine range of cliffs on Brandon mountain". Unfortunately he experienced very stormy weather and managed "barely two hours among the upper cliffs".
