Hardcover. Condition: As New. In the glory days of the Weimar Republic, the cheerful yet acerbic watercolor vignettes of the Berlin artist known as Dodo (DÃ rte Clara Wolff, 1907-1998) attained great popularity, becoming as iconic to their times as Jeanne Mammen's illustrations for Ulk; after relocating to Zurich, she switched styles and embraced New Objectivity. This volume offers the first appraisal of her career.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. iii, [1], 233, [5] pages. Occasional footnotes. Appendix: The Sorcerers Apprentice by John Wolgang v Goethe translated by Renate Wolff. Rare self-published by author previously published by mainstream publisher. Signed and dated by the author on the title page. Ex-Library of Congress stamp on verso. DJ has some wear and soiling. Renate Wolff Goepp was born March 16, 1920 in Berlin, Germany, and emigrated as a refugee from the Nazi regime in October 1938. She graduated with a B.A. from Goucher College, an M.Ed. from Smith College and M.A., Ph.D, from Bryn Mawr College. In her lifetime she was both a teacher and an author, and published five books. At Spelman, Renate was a successful teacher, influencing the lives of many students who themselves went on to be influential. Renate counted among her former students at Spelman Alice Walker, Julian Bond (then a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta), and Marion Wright (later Wright-Edelman). This work is a historical novel in five episodes, each laid in a different century. The author sets herself this question: if born into another era, would one still be the same individual? This work is set in the Midlands of England, Colonial Massachusetts, Virginia (before and after the Revolution), London, and Berlin and Moscow.
