Silver lettering and decoration on the spine. Top edge gold gilt. Pages uncut on the long and bottom edge. Multiple library stamps including: Sticker from University of Aberdeen on the front pastedown, showing the book was presented to the library in 1906 by "John Playfair" (likely Dr John Playfair (1849-1933)); stamp on the title page "Scottish Hospital Centre Library" and faded "withdrawn" stamp; smaller University of Aberdeen stamp on blank page and title page; and final "Scottish Hospital Centre Library" stamp with entry details on the blank page opposite the dedication. Outline of stamp also visible on the front board. Boards are discoloured in places and there are small cosmetic splits of the covering at the spine. Spine binding is also a little loose, but this hasn't affected the stability of the binding. Internally the book is clean and in excellent condition.

Externally, sound, though with some rubbing and some bumping. Sunning to the spine, and some dampstaining to the front board. Internally, generally firmly bound, although strained in places. Pages are bright, with just some foxing to the first and last few pages. Good. book.

A tight, handsome, internally near fine first edition of this large and large-margined history, with title page printed partly in red for a faux 17th century look. The discreetest ex-library copy, an inoffensive abrasion near the foot of the spine being virtually the only indication.
