Erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Roscoe (1753-1831) war zwar Jurist und als Rechtsanwalt in Liverpool tätig, fand dennoch noch die Zeit für seine Interessen im Bereich der Biologie (Erstbeschreibung der Paradieskörner Aframomum melegueta im Jahr 1828) und der Geschichte. Er verfasste eine Biographie des prächtigen Lorenzo de Medicis, die im Jahre 1796 erschien, sowie die vorliegende Biographie von Leben und Pontifikat Leos X., die im Jahre 1805 veröffentlicht wurde. Im Jahr 1806 erschien bereits der erste Band der deutschen Übertragung. Es erschien erst in den Jahren 1816-1817 in Mailand eine Übertragung ins Italienische, die im Jahre 1825 - mit dem Original von 1805 - auf den römischen Index der Kirche gesetzt wurde (offenbar aber nicht die vorliegende deutsche Übertragung!). Roscoe, der auch ein politischer Mensch war und hierbei vehement gegen den Sklavenhandel eintrat, war der Großvater des überaus bedeutenden Ökonomen und Philosophen Willam Stanley Jevons.
