"Verwandlung der Bewegung"; V. "Uebertragung der Bewegung auf bedeutende Entfernungen". - Wilhelm Salzenberg (1803 - 1887) war Schüler Schinkels. Ein Schwerpunkt seiner Tätigkeit lag im architektonischen Bereich (z.B. der Entwurf für das Generaltelegraphenamt in Berlin und sein Vorsitz in der Kommission zum Bau des Berliner Domes). Bedeutung erlangte er auch als Autor eines 1854 erschienenen Tafelwerkes über byzantinische Baudenkmale. Von 1837 bis 1847 arbeitete er als Lehrer für Maschinenbau an der Berliner Bauakademie. - Oberes Kapital defekt; Deckelbezug vereinzelt leicht gelöst und mit Fehlstellen; Außengelenke, Ecken und Kanten teils stärker beschabt und bestoßen. Vorderer fliegender Vorsatz, Titel verso und S.450 teils mehrfach gestempelt; stellenweise stärker braunfleckig.

One volume (of two), large folio (67 x 51 cm). Plate volume only, tinted lithographed plate of a Byzantine cross, chromolithographed title, and 39 numbered plates, including 13 chromolithographs, 4 tinted lithographs and 22 engravings (of which two double page plates), with an additional lithograph of Saint Sophia bound in; some light spotting, mainly marginal. Without the 2 leaves of list of plates. Publisher's printed boards with stylized Greek cross on front board, blue cloth spine; board edges slightly rubbed. An excellent example of this celebrated second edition, limited to only a few copies, of this important work on christian architecture in Constantinople. The present work is considered to this day a milestone in the study of style and design of Orthodox churches in Constantinople. Furthermore, the current edition is mentioned as being a "luxury publication issued at the expense of the Prussian government [.] costing 240 francs each" already at the time of its publication in 1854 (Brunet, 103). 'Salzenberg was a student of Karl Friedrich von Schinkel and practised as an architect at Berlin. In 1848 he travelled to Constantinople to take advantage of Fossati's restoration to the fabric of St. Sophia, in order to examine the building closely. Salzenberg spent five months in Constantinople and was able to make detailed drawings of mosaics in the church which had been brought to light during the works in progress. These mosaics were later covered over with plaster and by 1850 none were visible. Salzenberg's important work remains the major source of information about the mosaics of St. Sophia', Blackmer. (Blackmer). 1000 copies were printed for individual persons. This copy belonged to 'Ender S. Özer Bagciman. All copies were numbered. (651/1000). The churches Salzenberg describes illustrating the development of a Christian architecture away from the secular long nave basilica or of the classical temple (never intended for congregational use), to a Greek-cross plan with a central dome, allowing greater accessibility to the altar table. Most of the text is devoted to the cathedral of the Holy Wisdom [i.e. Hagia Sophia], built-in Constantinople for Justinian I by Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus, who dared to set a large dome over a square with the support of pendentives, achieving, with eastern and western half-domes, an uninterrupted span of over 200 feet. This building provided a model or inspiration to architects of the Middle East and Europe seeking to experiment with central, domed structures.
