Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - In recent years, Islam - whether via the derivatives of 'Political Islam' or 'Islamism' - has come to be seen as an 'activist' force in social and political spheres worldwide. What such representations have neglected is the strong countervailing tradition of political quietism. Political quietism in Islam holds that it is not for Muslims to question or oppose their leaders. Rather, the faithful should concentrate on their piety, prayer, religious rituals and personal quest for virtue. This book is the first to analyze the history and meaning of political quietism in Islamic societies. It takes an innovative cross-sectarian approach, investigating the phenomenon and practice across both Sunni and Shi'i communities. Contributors deconstruct and introduce the various forms of political quietisms from the time of the prophetic revelations through to the contemporary era. Chapters cover issues ranging from the politics of public piety among the women preachers in Saudi Arabia, through to the legal discourses in the Caucasus, the different Shi'i communities in Iran, Lebanon, Iraq and Pakistan, and the Gülen movement in Azerbaijan. The authors describe a wide range of political quietisms and assess the continuing significance of the tradition, both to the study of Islam and to the modern world today.

This Saudi edition is extremely rare, with Worldcat recording only a first US edition published with the same title by the Reg't Quartermaster International, Colorado Springs, CO, 1971, but described as unpaged with some colour illustrations (OCLC 23181622).

Volume I Sunrise is the 'Poetry' of King Abdullah, his quips. In a photo picture book of King Abdullah. Volume II Sunset photographs the natural world. Faissal Ibn Abdullah Ibn Muhammad Al-Saud : 'The collection 'Sunrise & Sunset' reflects special moments that added a colorful meaning to my lite. The sunset is a moving and instantaneously changing beauty I see in everything, for everything and with everything. The Sunrise symbolizes a man who provided me with the courage and inspiration to practice and enjoy my hobby. He would joke with me saying: 'It is sunset, go catch the sun before it is concealed by the dusk'. This collection embodies and transmits a long journey with a respected father, King Abdullah Ibn Abdulaziz. I was honored to be with him during some of his trips and private occasions, documenting through my lens those special moments that protray the genuine human qualities of a great leader, who carries the hopes and the concerns for the future of his nation. This is my collection and in it, I see a hope for the future and a feeling of gratitude for the blessing of health and well-being. I wish to share these emotions with you to benefit those of our children who have cancer. By this effort, I hope we can successfully support the welfare mission and help those children who are in urgent need for someone to stand by them and ease their suffering through the difficulties of their long and painful treatment.' Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
Black and white gelatin silver photograph, 195 x 137 mm. Mounted on card emblazoned with the blind-stamped arms of Saudi Arabia and further housed in matting. Signed in blue ink on lower margin of photograph. Signed just four years before his assassination: a formal black and white photograph of HH King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, with his signature below, dated in both Hijri and Gregorian calendars to the 23rd of December 1971 (6/11/1291). Tipped onto a card embossed with the arms of Saudi Arabia. - Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was a son of the first ruler of Saudi Arabia, HH King Abdulaziz. In 1964 he wrested control of the country from his elder brother HH King Saud in a bloodless coup, in which he was supported by the royal family and the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia. Saud went into exile, and Faisal was formally named king; he would rule Saudi Arabia for just over ten years, until he was shot by one of his nephews in 1975. His political life, however, spanned decades, starting when he was no older than thirteen, and his influence first as prince, then crown prince, and subsequently as king was immense. During his rule, Faisal was known both as religiously conservative and as a reformer, who brought Saudi Arabia further into the modern age. - Tipped onto card; in excellent condition.

Oblong 4to (333 x 230) mm. Photo album with 12 baryte paper prints (125 x 110 mm) and 1 press photo (225 x 191 mm), the latter captioned, stamped and dated. Blue full percaline with gilt cover ornaments. Cord binding. A fine ensemble of photographs documenting the historic state visit to Iraq by King Saud of Saudi Arabia in May 1957, apparently photographed and assembled by a member of the Iraqi entourage closely involved throughout the visit. King Faisal II of Iraq and his Prime Minister Nuri As-Said met with King Saud to discuss the Pan-Arab movement led by Gamal Abdel Nasser, involving anti-monarchist efforts in Jordan. Eventually, talks in Baghdad were wound up "with a pledge to coordinate resistance to communism and a warning that no Arab state should meddle in the affairs of its neighbors" (caption of the press photograph). - The collection includes previously unseen pictures of the monarchs' arrival by car and carriage respectively, their mutual exchange of greetings, and the state dinner, as well as the subsequent talks held in the palace garden. - Not traced in the Keystone or Hulton/Getty press photo archives. In excellent condition.
