Rockefeller Jr. (1874-1960) was an American financier and the only son of John D. Rockefeller. Rockefeller was the founder of Standard Oil Company in 1870, which he ran until 1897. At its peak, Standard Oil controlled 90% of all oil in the United States, making the Rockefeller family the richest American family of all time. Rockefeller Jr. was one of the largest real estate holders in midtown Manhattan, with the construction of Rockefeller Center in 1931. The President's Daughter marked the first time that a presidential mistress published her story for the public. Nan Britton (1896-1991) alleged in the book that President Warren G. Harding was the father of her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Blaesing. With Harding's untimely death in 1923, he was unable to personally confirm or deny the scandal, but his family denied the allegation for years. In 2015, Britton's claim was confirmed using DNA testing. Nan Britton died in 1991 and her daughter, Elizabeth, died in 2005. The Warlord of Mars is the third novel in Edgar Rice Burrough's Barsoom series, preceded by A Princess of Mars and The Gods of Mars. (Junot Diaz) Many of Burrough's early works were serialized in The All-Story Magazine, with A Princess of Mars originally printed with the title "Under the Moons of Mars" under his pseudonym, Norman Bean. Both volumes have original cloth spines preserved on rear flyleaves and bookplates of Thomas W. Lawson on verso of front free endpapers. Senior Chaplain of the U.S. Navy Fitch W. Taylor (1803-1865) was first a minister for the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Maryland. During his twenty-four years of service in the U.S. Navy, Taylor circumnavigated the globe aboard the USS Columbia, one of the first U.S. naval ships to make such a voyage. The Flagship details his experiences aboard this vessel. The bookplates in these volumes belonged to Thomas W. Lawson (1857-1925), a controversial Boston businessman who promoted and manipulated stocks, primarily in the copper market. Scarce first edition, first printing of The Flagship by Fitch W.
