Der Einband ist stark berieben, Vorbesitzer Vermerk auf dem Vorsatz mit Tinte, einige Bleistift -Anstreichungen, vor allem im ersten Teil, die Seiten sind papierbedingt nachgedunkelt, ansonsten ein gutes Exemplar. -- (Auszug:) Vorrede. Der vor einigen Jahren an mich ergangenen Einladung meines geehrten Herrn Verlegers, eine Sammlung der gelesen- sten platonischen Dialoge mit deutschem Kommentar zu veran- stalten, konnte ich, obwohl mit anderen Arbeiten überhäuft, nicht wohl ausweichen; denn es ergab sich dadurch eine Ge- legenheit, Dialogen, die bereits vor längerer Zeit erschienen sind, die späteren Früchte meiner Studien zukommen zu lassen. Es wurde deshalb sogar das Projekt dahin erweitert, dass beschlossen wurde, zugleich mit jedem kommentierten Dialog eine kritische Handausgabe desselben erscheinen zu lassen . Man wollte dadurch zugleich dem oft empfundenen Miss- stand begegnen, dass gerade die am häufigsten gelesenen Dialoge fast sämtlich in der grossen kritischen Ausgabe mit anderen verbunden und nicht einzeln verkäuflich sind, sonach deren Benutzung in Schulen, bei Vorlesungen und Seminar- übungen erschwert ist. Dieser Benutzung dürfte jetzt umso- weniger etwas im Wege stehen, da der Herr Verleger für die kritischen Handausgaben einen ungemein niedrigen Preis normieren wird. Es ist selbstverständlich und bereits oben angedeutet, dass diese kritischen Handausgaben dem neuesten Standpunkt der Kritik angepasst werden; was seit dem Er- scheinen der Dialoge in der grossen kritischen Ausgabe von mir und anderen Neues gefunden, wird seine Verwertung finden. Die kommentierte Ausgabe wird denselben Text dar- bieten wie die kritische Handausgabe, infolgedessen war es unnötig, der kommentierten Ausgabe einen sogenannten kriti- schen Anhang beizugeben. Über die Beschaffenheit des Kom- mentars dürften folgende Bemerkungen am Platze sein: Der Kommentar macht bezüglich des Lesers keine grossen Voraussetzungen; er zieht daher auch elementare Dinge in seinen Bereich. Es war dies schon deshalb notwendig, damit der Kommentar auch für Unterrichtszwecke sich brauchbar erweise. Allein diese Rücksicht durfte nicht in jenen jetzt so vielfach üblichen engherzigen Standpunkt übergehen, nur das zu geben, was das allernächste Bedürfnis der Schule erfordert. Selbst eine Ausgabe, die sich ausdrücklich als Schulausgabe hin- stellt, soll, wie Krüger richtig bemerkt, keine Schülerausgabe sein. Ich steckte mir also ein höheres Ziel; mein Bestreben war dahin gerichtet, in dem Kommentar auch Dinge zu geben, welche selbst den Gelehrten interessieren können. Ich habe daher in demselben alle wichtigen kritischen Schwierigkeiten behandelt, Probleme der Grammatik öfters genauer angedeutet, Eigentümlichkeiten des platonischen Stils ausführlich und nicht selten abschliessend behandelt.
