Plain wrappers, large 4to, 52 pp, black-and-white ills. 166 items. The catalogue of the exhibition. From the foreword: "Members of the Society carry out a wide range of commissions including Presentation Addresses, Freedom Scrolls, Rolls of Honour, Peer's Patents, Service Books, family trees, decorative maps and certificates; certain events in family life such as christenings, weddings and celebration anniversaries may be commemorated by less formal manuscripts. Within a conservative tradition these commissions allow the calligrapher scope - ranging from the magnificant in concept to the lively and gay. Many such works are transcribed on vellum or handmade paper and enriched with heraldry and gold leaf. It is more than twelve years since the SSI held a major exhibition in London and this period has been outstanding for the development of so-called expressive calligraphy which has freed the scribe from the narrower field of formal penmanship with its emphasis on precision of letter-forms and symmetry of layout. This spontaneous approach has produced some exciting manuscripts, especially where the scribe has a sound understanding of styles of writing and knows when rules can be broken. There is a fashion today for denigrating authority of all kinds which leads to an undervaluing of traditions. A craft so essentially based on manual discipline as calligraphy cannot afford to sever itself from its own roots. While freedom of expression should be encouraged it should be remembered that nearly 'all libertarian movements tend towards license'. " Very Good in dustwrapper.

Printed wrappers, large 8vo, [71] pp, ills (some colour). 139 entris. From the introduction: "In the three years since the 60th Anniversary Exhibition 'The Art of the Scribe', the Society of Scribes and Illuminators has continued to grow in membership and this exhibition 'Calligraphy '84' represents recent work by a wide cross section of practising members. The exhibits show work by amateurs and professionals and elected Craft Members and Lay Members from a number of countries. The British tradition of controlled craftsmanship with its sound letter forms is well in evidence, but there is much to delight both the eye and the imagination in the more recent trend towards expressive and interpretative calligraphy. Work for reproduction and multiple copies is represented as well as items in three dimensional media." Near Fine.
