The crocodiles are surrounded by beautifully depicted flora and plant life, including a border of orchids around the second scene, with vines wound around into an art nouveau motif. The bottom scene features a rock carved with Egyptian hieroglyphics. This print is from Seder's book Das Thier in Der Decorativen Kunst (Animals in Decorative Art), incorporating animals and mythical creatures into decorative motifs. Anton Seder was a painter from Munich. His designs were also included in many periodicals of decorative arts designs, issued as chromolithographs. …

Important art nouveau work incorporating plants into decorative motifs. Munich painter Anton Seder (1850-1916), was the first director of the Ecole Supà rieure des Arts Dà coratifs, founded in 1890, where he served for many years. Strasbourg had been ceded by France to Germany in 1871 and was returned to France in 1918; therefore, the cultural environment was a mixture of French and German influences. Seder co-edited the magazine Das Kunstgewerbe in Elsass-Lothringen (The Arts and Crafts in Alsace-Lorraine). His designs were also included in many periodicals of decorative arts designs, issued as chromolithographs. 2 volumes folio (55 x 39 cm), 3 colour titles, register of plates and 196 lithograph plates of which 113 are in colour (some heightened with gold and silver) by Johann Haupt, Anton Hartinger, J.
